Feyenoord seemed the better option:
a bigger, more established organisation
which was closer to home. And just to
make the decision easier, the De Jong
family were fans of the Rotterdammers.
Frenkie, however, was allowed to make
his own mind up. He preferred Willem.
Throughout his life, total dedication to
football has been the name of the game.
For him, every sacrifice was worth it to
make his soccer dream come true.
“Frenkie is about peace, propriety and
regularity,” his mother, Marjon, told NRC.
“Early to bed, no parties, healthy eating
and no alcohol.”
Thom Van der Laan, a friend from his
schooldays, painted the same type of
picture, saying: “As a teenager he wasn’t
interested in clothes or expensive cars. It
was football, football, football. I never
knew him without a ball.”
During a family holiday to the Costa
Brava six years ago, Frenkie and his
father visited Camp Nou, Barcelona’s
iconic stadium.
The reaction of junior? “Dad, I want
to play there one day.”
Wish granted.
