A
lso known as the “Derby
of the eternal rivals”, the
Olympiakos-Panathinaikos
showdown sees a coming
together of the two most successful
teams in Greece.
Founded in 1908, Panathinaikos
are from the centre of Athens and
were originally considered
to represent the city’s
ruling classes. Olympiakos,
meanwhile, were formed 17
years later around the city’s
port of Piraeus and attracted
fans from the surrounding
working-class areas.
Today, both clubs enjoy
support from all social
classes and across the
whole of the country,
but there is little doubt
which team is the dominant force.
Over the past 23 seasons Olympiakos
have won the Super League 19 times,
with Panathinaikos champions just twice.
They have also won 79 major titles in
total, compared to Panathinaikos’ 44.
Panathinaikos, however, are the only
Greek side to reach a continental club
Final, finishing runners-up
in the 1971 European Cup.
While players have moved
from one side to the other, it
is a switch only the bravest
consider making as feelings
run high. When Stratos
Apostolakis left Olympiakos
for Panathinaikos in 1990,
that year’s Greek Super Cup
was cancelled due to fears
that fans who were appalled
at the move would riot.
