On1 January2019,JairBolsonarobecame
the38thpresidentofBrazil.Withbold
visionsofincreasingeconomicdevelopment
inthecountry,heviewedtheAmazon
asa cashcowtobeexploited.According
toAuricéliaArapium,anindigenous
leaderfromParáStateinBrazil,“Boththe
environmentandindigenouspeopleshave
beencalled‘barrierstodevelopment’bythe
currentgovernment.”
Sincetakingoffice,thepresidenthas
systematicallycutfundingforthecountry’swildlifeconservationworkandweakened
itsenvironmentallegislationwhilesacking
staffthatworkinenvironmentdepartments.
“Whatchangedthisyearwasthepublic
discourseofthepresidentdefendingland
grabbersandalltypesofcriminalswhofelt
freetocommitcrimes,”reflectsReis.
Numerousindigenouscommunitieslive
withintheAmazonandmanyconcurthattheburninghasbeencausedbycommercial
farmersspurredonbyBrazil’spresident.
