‘A biologist by profession, I have had a lifelong

interest in plants. As well as photographing

nature, I am attracted to graphical and

architectural motifs. My wife has a beautiful

garden but in photographing the flowers in it,

I have found that their colour often overpowers

the beauty of their design and structure. In this

project I have removed the colour and sought

to emphasise the underlying texture and shape

of the flowers. Additionally, I have tried to

bring out their ethereal nature by displaying

the images on a white background. Each of

the flowers was photographed in my home

studio at a range of focal distances covering the

whole depth of the flower. Those images were

then combined using the Zerene Systems focus

stacking softwear. The final images were then

converted to black & white in Silver Efex Pro

and adjustments made in Photoshop.’

In our search for some of the best work by black & white aficionados,

we came across Ben Miflin’s graphic flower images that reveal

both their ethereal quality as well as their inherent structure.
