© Ben MiflinCalla LilyClematis‘A biologist by profession, I have had a lifelong
interest in plants. As well as photographing
nature, I am attracted to graphical and
architectural motifs. My wife has a beautifulgarden but in photographing the flowers in it,
I have found that their colour often overpowers
the beauty of their design and structure. In thisproject I have removed the colour and sought
to emphasise the underlying texture and shape
of the flowers. Additionally, I have tried tobring out their ethereal nature by displaying
the images on a white background. Each of
the flowers was photographed in my homestudio at a range of focal distances covering the
whole depth of the flower. Those images were
then combined using the Zerene Systems focusstacking softwear. The final images were then
converted to black & white in Silver Efex Pro
and adjustments made in Photoshop.’In our search for some of the best work by black & white aficionados,
we came across Ben Miflin’s graphic flower images that reveal
both their ethereal quality as well as their inherent structure.
