For many VR is merely a stepping stone

towards augmented reality (AR), and the

patent shows a headset with a transparent

visor where the cameras beam data into the

user’s eyes, forgoing the need for a screen.

“Eye tracking is almost guaranteed to be in

second-generation VR headsets,” said Will

Mason, co-founder of virtual reality media

company UploadVR, when interviewed by

USA Today. “It’s an incredibly important

piece of the VR puzzle.”

Sony has been clear there won’t

be a PS VR 2 at the launch of

PS5, but that doesn’t mean new

hardware isn’t coming. A patent

filed by Sony suggests the next

PS VR will feature two front- and

one rear-mounted camera, as well

as LEDs around the headset, and

a separate camera sat near

the PS5. We can hope.
