I

have chosen the beautiful grounds

of Burrswood to illustrate the pen

and wash technique in this month’s

project. The garden provided

a haven of peace and tranquillity with

stunning views overlooking undulating

fields, woodlands, ponds, rockeries

and flowers contrasted with the

architectural elements of an imposing

Wealden stone house, the

contemporary chapel, winding walls

and planters tumbling with colour.

I hope the following information on

techniques will help you to tackle the

project, interpreting it in any way you

wish. Take the risk, loosen up and

practise sketching with either the line

or tonal method directly onto a sheet

of paper or begin with a minimal

pencil sketch as a guide as shown in

Garden Leading towards the Chapel

(page 22).

Capture the subject’s essence. Suggest

the flower heads, adding even more if

you wish. Try not to think that you are

copying from a static photograph.

Imagine you are outside and practise

your style and technique in preparation

for painting in a garden itself.

The more you practise, the more your

own individual and expressive style

will evolve. Have fun!

small selection varying from a fine 0.1 to

a thicker 0.8., which I select depending

on the scale of the drawing and the

thickness of the line I need. A

permanent felt style pen can also be a

good alternative, giving a slightly

stronger and varied line.

Sketchbooks can be bought in all shapes

and sizes. A slightly textured paper or a

smooth surface is optional, but try to

avoid a paper that is too thin, as it will

buckle when watercolour is added.

I like to have a selection of warm and cool

shades based around the primary colours (right).

lCoolPermanent rose, Winsor blue (green

shade) and aureolin yellow

are quinacridone magenta and opera rose,

as they are very fresh colours.

All greens can be mixed with the selection

of blues and yellow.

You will also need a small water bottle

and container, a B pencil and eraser.
