1 With ultramarine indicate the background
sea, and with a light wash of cobalt and
cerulean blue, add foreground water.
2 Add a light wash of ochre for one
of the rocks and suggest sand.

Step 2
1 Having taped off the drawing, use the paper on
the right as a swatch for testing the colours, value or
consistency of the paint before committing to the picture.
2 Leave the top of the painting dry, but lightly spray the
horizon and the rock edges. This prevents a hard edge
and lightens the sky as it approaches the horizon.
3 With a mix of ultramarine and cobalt blue, start
at the top and as you work down to meet the wetter
paper it gradually gets lighter towards the horizon.

1 When dry, allow a light wash of burnt
sienna and ultramarine to mix on the
paper over the entire areas of rocks.
2 Use a lighter mix of this on the distant

1 Tape the paper to a board so you can
manipulate the flow of the paint if necessary.
2 Lightly draw the subject as the lines of the
composition may show through the paint; this
isn’t a worry with the thicker oil techniques.
Avoid using an eraser, as it can damage the
surface or resist the paint.
3 Sketch out the darks to achieve a basic
light and shadow study; the darks will
be covered in paint anyway.
