fter judging the entries to the Leisure
PainterOpen Competition a couple of
weeks ago, I sat down with fellow judge,
Liz Wood, to talk about what we had just seen. We were delighted with
the work we had chosen, both for the exhibition and for the highly
commended category, which can be viewed on our website at
PaintersOnline from 11 July (don’t forget to vote for your favourite!). As
Liz is such an experienced painter and tutor, I am always keen to hear
her views. She was particularly impressed by how well the paintings
had been composed this year and encourages everyone to take time to
finessethe edges of their work before pronouncing them finished. ‘Last
year we saw a lot of subjects placed in the middle of the paper and no
notice taken of the space around them. This year, we viewed many
more complete compositions, showing good shapes at the edges of the
paintings, which were much more successful.’
Chosen work was pleasing to the eye, showed a certain bravuraand
took on a life of its own. ‘Before beginning a new painting, and
especially if you are painting for a competition,’ Liz continued, ‘it’s
important to ask yourself: what would I really enjoy painting? Forget
the competition. If you paint for yourself, you can be sure you will
give other people pleasure in viewing it. If you are enthusiastic about
your painting, the work will come alive.
‘When you become more skilled, don’t be sidetracked by
commissions. It’s more important that the precious time you have
for painting gives you pleasure. When you relax, it becomes a kind
of therapy. You will become lost in your work, which is good for your
wellbeing and for the finished result.’ Just before we turned to
The Artistentries, Liz added: ‘Don’t let the composition become the
pervading reason for painting the picture. Successsful painting is all
about the enthusiasm you put into it.’
The Leisure Painterand The ArtistOpen Competition exhibitions
will open at Patchings Art, Craft & Design Festival on 11 July and
continue until 11 August. We all look forward to meeting as many
of you as possible at the festival. Don’t forget to stop by our marquee
