round the corner, in the same way and
using the same colours as the last raw
umber house.
Step 10
1 Fill in the roof on this
building using fairly weak
burnt sienna. While this
dries, fill in the windows
in the usual manner as
before, going back to the
roof with a stronger mix
of burnt sienna for a few
uneven lines.
2 Add the all-important
shadow, which, this time, is
also put inside the window
frame, on the top and
down the left-hand side.
3 Add a weaker mix
of the shadow colour
underneath where the
ivy is going to go.

Step 8
1 For the large building in the foreground, use
the No. 8 Round brush and fill in the roof with
well watered-down burnt sienna. At this stage,
don’t forget the roof of the porch and the
chimney is raw umber, which is a stronger
mix on one side and with more water added
on the other side.
2 Once the roof is dry, fill in the darker side
of the building with ultramarine blue and
a touch of light red.
3 For the lighter side, add well-watered Charles
Evans sand watercolour with a few touches of
yellow ochre dropped in while still wet.
4 While this side is drying, turn your attention
to the window. This is done, as before, but
using a slightly stronger mix.
t
5 Fill in the
doorway of the
porch with a good
strong mix of
ultramarine blue
and burnt sienna.
6 And now it’s
shadow time
again! With the
same mix as
before, but slightly
stronger, paint
underneath the
roof and that all-important
diagonal line on the porch.
7 Add the building just behind, peeking
Step 9
1 It’s now time to paint the right-hand
side. Begin by concentrating on the furthest
away of the houses. Fill in the roof using
ultramarine blue and burnt sienna. Once
this is dry, add a few broken lines to intimate
tiles, using the same mix but stronger.
2 Paint the walls of the house and the
chimneys with raw umber, but make the
mix much weaker in the chimneys. Use the
same process and mix for the window as
before. Don’t forget to go back in and
add a few stones.
3 Use the No. 8 Round brush to paint
the foreground building. Pre-wet the
entire building and fill in with Charles Evans
sand. While this is still wet, drop on a few
touches of yellow ochre, light red and,
finally, ultramarine blue.
4 With a clean damp brush, stroke over
and merge the colours slightly.
