Setup your start page
In macOS Catalina, a new tab or
window shows only the most visited
Favourite sites; use Show More to see
the full list. You can use Preferences
to change the number of sites or set
Safari to show Top Sites instead.
2
Eliminate autoplay
When a site plays music, Safari
shows a loudspeaker icon in the
address bar and also on the tab for
that particular site. Click on either icon
to instantly mute the audio, or ≈-click
to block all auto-play audio.
3
Pop out video
When you’re playing video, ≈-click
on the speaker icon and you’ll see a new
option, Enter Picture In Picture. This
works like iOS, popping the video out
so you can move to another tab while
still watching the video.

Safari secrets
Boost the benefits
of Apple’s browser
Instead of listing every
single website from your
favourites, Safari in
macOS Catalina shows
your most frequently used sites plus
Siri Suggestions, which are based on
things you’ve searched for or been sent
recently. You can re-order icons with
drag and drop, and use Show More if you
want to see everything. If you’d rather
see bookmarks from a particular folder
here you can change that in Safari >
Preferences > General > Favourites Shows.
You can also change the default number
of sites from 12 to 6 or 24.
If you type in the address of a site
you’ve already got open in a tab, Safari
will show you a ‘Switch to Tab’ option. The
Window menu has a new ‘Tile Window to
Left/Right of screen’ for quick display
tidying, and you can now pop out the
video playing inside a page. This enables
you to get on with other things in Safari
while keeping the video on-screen.
Safari’s preferences give you a lot
of control over what sites can do to your
Mac. If you select the Websites icon
you can see what apps can use which
features, such as downloads, location or
your Mac’s microphone. You can revoke
that access or change it from within
preferences. So, for example, if you want
‘Site X’ to get access to your microphone
or location you can change the setting
from Ask to Allow. You can store the page
zoom settings for individual sites where
the default text is too big or too small
without changing Safari’s defaults.
HOW TO Use Safari’s new tricks
Use ç++ to zoom in on a page in Safari.
If you find regularly visited sites tricky to read,
you can adjust the zoom level just for that site.
