22 THE BEATLES 1969 PEOPLE

THE OTHER SIDE

OF THE STAGE

On Aug. 31, 1969, Bob Dylan
(above) played the Isle of
Wight Festival, a three-day
concert that also featured
the Who, the Moody Blues
and others. In the audience
were (from left): George and
Pattie Harrison, Maureen
and Ringo Starr and John
Lennon and Yoko Ono.
(Dylan had famously
introduced the lads to pot at
New York City’s Delmonico
Hotel in August 1964. “We
got high, and we laughed
our asses off,” Ringo told
Conan O’Brien in 2012.)
Rumors—false, as it turned
out—that the Beatles would
join Dylan onstage made the
show an in-demand ticket.
