MUMMIES MARKET
The mummy craze led to a
macabre souvenir trade. “I am
persuaded that,” wrote the
French aristocrat Ferdinand
de Géramb in 1833, “a
traveler returning from Egypt
cannot decently show his face
in Europe without a mummy
in one hand and a crocodile
in another.”A mummy vendor
rests by his wares in Egypt
around 1877.
