LIVING

The trick is to have the best DJ to
get the vibe going. I’m all about my
Afrobeats: Mr Eazi, Burna Boy, Tiwa
Savage. It ensures a great time when
everyone knows the music and can jam
together. And I always ask that phones
are put away. I like to be around people
who are living in the moment, and
once the phones are out of the picture,
everyone can fully enjoy themselves in
the way that they want to.

Christmas is my favourite time of the
year. As soon as November rolls around,
it means it’s almost time for our big
party on Christmas Eve. We look
forward to it all year long. It was
traditionally hosted at my house for
about 40 years, but now the girls are
starting to take it over.

Because we hold parties together, each
one of us contributes to the creative
direction. We arrange a family meeting
to throw ideas around – discussing what
matters most, weighing the importance
of every element and settling on a theme.
Last year, it was at Kim and Kanye’s
home, and he conceptualised a very
modern take on Dr Seuss’s Whoville.
We also receive wonderful inspiration
from our friends. I remember Chrissy
Teigen and John Legend had an amazing
photo-booth experience at a party of
theirs, which I couldn’t wait to try.
Kim takes the lead on deciding all
of our style, so I look to her for outfit
inspiration, and it’s a lot of fun to plan
what we and the kids will be wearing.
We like to be co-ordinated so that the
family photos are unforgettable.
Our guests arrive for a huge dinner,
and then we get everyone on the

dancefloor. My favourite drink is a
Skinny Bitch (vodka soda with lime).
Everybody’s seen a little window into
what we do because of the annual card,
but that entire period is really all about
the kids. We’ll always have Santa and
his elves, and from the beginning of
December we’ll make gingerbread
houses and have fun decorating. Getting
together for that family Christmas
moment is so important.

My husband and I opened The Fife
Arms Hotel in Braemar, Aberdeenshire,
last year. Restoring that Victorian gem
was a real labour of love. For its inaugural
Christmas, we asked our neighbours
to share with us traditional Scottish
festivities, which we combined with
our own family traditions. Together
with our children, we baked ornate
gingerbread houses and made wreaths
from local flora to dress the tables and
walls. We built a giant garland from
pine and fir for the entrance arch. Our
tree in the lobby was decorated with
homemade baubles, and the local choir
sang carols around it.
Some nights, guests would wrap up
in tartan blankets (custom-made by
Scottish designer Araminta Campbell)
and sit by the fire, listening to the sound
of bagpipes and sipping hot cocktails
mixed with homemade liqueurs. Or
we would eat roasted chestnuts around
an open fire in the courtyard, which
centres on a Louise Bourgeois Spider
sculpture. It felt like the perfect tribute
to the building’s legacy. Q
