a sense of history than some of the newer

resorts. Kitzbühel is perhaps best known

for the annual Hahnenkamm downhill ski

race, a World Cup event that attracts top

international athletes – it’s famously thrilling

to watch, and notoriously dangerous to

compete in.

There are some charming properties to be

found hidden away in the surrounding coun-

tryside, such as an 18-century chalet which

is being sold through Savills. This tradition-

al building is full of character, with plenty

of period details – these include the iron-

studded front door, which dates from 1636.

Intriguingly, the building was moved to its

present location in 1976 – before then, it

had been in north Austria. Unusually for a

ski property, this chalet has a pretty garden,

and in fact it’s perhaps even more bucolic

during the summer months. For that’s an

often-overlooked aspect of owning a chalet

• you might initially plan to lock it up and
