LACMA’s Art + Film Gala
Los Angeles, Nov. 2

Art and Soul
LACMA’s ninth Art + Film
gala earned the “Met Gala
of the West” nickname for
its A-list mix of fashionistas
(thanks to sponsor Gucci),
movie stars (Leonardo
DiCaprio, Jared Leto)
and museum backdrop
($4.6 million was raised).
“It’s very chic and a dif-
ferent group of people,”
says Salma Hayek, who
singled out honorees
Alfonso Cuarón (1) and
artist Betye Saar (5). “It’s
a rough moment we’re in
— a year to the elections,
California is on fire, and it
all can get you down,” said
Liz Goldwyn. “It’s nice to
come here and experience
joie de vivre.” After dinner,
Billie Eilish (4) introduced
Anderson .Paak (3), who
gave a nightcap perfor-
mance. “It’s so much more
than a fashion moment,”
added Yara Shahidi (6)
of the Met Gala nod. “It’s
fashion supporting film,
supporting art, supporting
music — and all mediums.”

Oscars of Science
Despite the ongoing
controversy surrounding
political ads on Facebook,
Mark Zuckerberg (10)
took center stage at
the Breakthrough Prize
ceremony and was teased
by host James Corden
as being among “the
smartest minds and the
worst haircuts in history.”
Dubbed the “Oscars of
Science,” the event, of
which Zuckerberg and his
wife, Priscilla Chan, are
sponsors, awarded more
than $20 million in recogni-
tion of achievements in
science and math this year.
A-list presenters included
Drew Barrymore (11) and
Allison Janney, and Lenny
Kravitz (10) and will.i.am
took the stage for the
evening’s performances.
Outside the NASA Ames
Research Center, Edward
Norton (12) spoke of
the award’s importance,
saying that kids tend
to look up to celebrities
rather than scientists and
to “create a ceremony
around that — at the same
level of the Academy
Awards — is a great idea.”
