thought the place was cool and
loved running from room to
room.
A year or two after that, my
mother sent me to school at an
ashram in Pomfret, Conn. When
the ashram didn’t work out, I re-
turned to the city and attended
Intermediate School 70. I didn’t
act there. Instead, I played bass

clarinet in the band. The instru-
ment looked like a thin saxo-
phone and set me apart.
At Hampshire College, two
theater professors were espe-
cially encouraging: Rhonda Blair
and Ellen Donkin. I walked a fine
line between playwright and ac-
tor. Len Berkman, my creative-
writing adviser, pushed me over

the line to act.
The first time I felt really
comfortable on stage was in “The
Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui,” by
Bertolt Brecht. I found I was bet-
ter with an audience than with
people. I know this sounds
strange. As a group, audiences
respond to performers in an hon-
est and emotional semi-predict-
able way.
From an actor’s perspective, I
enjoyed the formality of lan-
guage. It was like having a road
map. Once you knew the lines in
ascript,youwerefreetoshape
the character any way you
wished. It was strangely liberat-
ing.
Everything changed for me in
the early 1990s when George
Wolfe invited me to become part
of New York’s Public Theater.
George was the artistic director.
He said if I made a commitment
to the Public, they’d make a com-
mitment to me.
Over the next five years, I had
an opportunity to grow and
showcase myself as an artist at
one of New York’s cultural epi-
centers. I also appeared regularly
in the Public’s “Shakespeare in
the Park” productions.
Today, I live in Manhattan’s
Nolita neighborhood. When I
moved into my apartment in
1994, it was a relatively small
one-bedroom. A few years later, I
bought the duplex next door and
broke through.
The night I moved in, I
climbed into bed and immedi-
ately realized my bedroom was
directly above the subway. I went
to sleep imagining the thunder-
ing below was the sound of the
surf. The subway is still my fa-
vorite thing about the apart-
ment.
When I act in “Ray Donovan,”
I think of my grandfather. I still
admire his stoicism, toughness
and strength.
My grandfather came to see
me perform at the Public before
he died in 1993. Backstage, he
said he loved my performance
and was overjoyed for me. He
had this habit of laughing and
crying at the same time, so
happy that his eyes would tear.

hair loose and had a crazy faux-
fur coat that made her look like a
Cossack. I’d walk 10 feet behind
her when she wore it.
I drew a lot growing up, most
notably elves and fairies—fan-
tasy stuff. My mother and grand-
father had encouraged me to
read when I was little. I loved
“Grimms’ Fairy Tales” and
Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer
Night’s Dream.” I also enjoyed
reading out loud, especially
Shakespeare.
When I was around 9, my
mom enrolled me in dance
classes. I danced a lot around the
house, so she thought I had
promise that should be devel-
oped.
A year later, my mother
moved us to the Integral Yoga In-
stitute on 13th Street. Her guru
named me Shivadas, which
means servant of Shiva, a leading
Hindu god. My friends called me
Häagen-Dazs. Each room at the
institute had a different color. I

Favorite film:“Being There” (1979).
Peter Sellers blurs the line between
inspiration and idiocy.

Favorite film you’re in:“A Walk on
the Moon” (1999). It reminds me of
my grandfather.

Surprising hobby:Collage

Reflection on playing a tough guy:
Drama employs just as much tim-
ing as comedy. It’s like music.

How so:Holding a look for four
beats does something very differ-
ent than a passing glance.

Album that reminds you of grow-
ing up:The Beatles’ “Rubber Soul”
