ELIMINATING THE ORLOVKA SALIENT
SEPTEMBER 24–OCTOBER 7, 1942
In late September, the German 6th Army
assaulted the salient around the Orlovka district
at the northern end of the city. They trapped 500
Soviet soldiers using a pincer movement. Under
constant attack from Stuka dive bombers, artillery,
and ground forces, the Soviet troops in the pocket
tried to hold on. Finally, on October 7, 120
survivors broke out to join Red Army forces
at the tractor factory near the river.

TIMELINE
URBAN WARFARE
The city of Stalingrad and its factories
were spread along 17 miles (27 km) of
the Volga River. The Soviet troops were
pushed back until they were trapped in
small pockets along a narrow strip of
land on the west bank of the river.

TARGETING THE FACTORIES
SEPTEMBER 27–NOVEMBER 18, 1942
The remnants of the Soviet 62nd Army now
sheltered in the factory district. The Germans
launched a huge assault and, despite resistance
that saw factory workers repairing equipment
on the battlefield, by October 29 they controlled
90 percent of the city. Nevertheless, the Soviets
held on to small pockets, buying time for the
counteroffensive to come (see pp.152–153).

BATTLES IN THE CITY STREETS
SEPTEMBER 13–27, 1942
On September 13, the Germans attacked the
southern section of the city itself. They were
soon caught in brutal close-range combat with
Soviet forces, who fought for every building. Key
locations—like the Central Station and Mamayev
Kurgan, a hill above the city—changed hands many
times during weeks of exhausting fighting.
