PICKETT’S CHARGE, GETTYSBURG
On the third day of battle at Gettysburg, the heroic but catastrophic
charge by George Pickett’s infantry division on the Union center
clinched the Confederate defeat. Almost 15,000 men advanced
over open fields and encountered relentless Federal artillery and
infantry fire that caused severe casualties. The event is depicted in
this famous cyclorama—a huge circular painting—of 1883 by the
French artist Paul Philippoteaux.
