UNION WAGON TRAIN
Any large-scale invasion of enemy territory during the Civil War
presented formidable problems of logistics. General George McClellan
did an excellent job of organizing, equipping, and supplying the Army
of the Potomac for the Peninsula Campaign of 1862. A vast wagon
train is seen here crossing a stream on the Virginia Peninsula. The
artist John B. Bachelder made numerous sketches of this campaign,
and Union officers vouched for the accuracy of his lithographs.
