FEINBERG FORECAST

BEST PICTURE

1917
Sam Mendes’ anticipated World War I
saga, filmed to look like one continuous
take, will not be screened for press until
the end of November. That’s a very late
start for the Universal awards hopeful,
especially in a year in which the Oscars
have moved up to early February.

The Irishman
Previewing its awards campaign, Netflix
pulled out all the stops for its $159 million
hopeful at a black-tie premiere (attended
by director Martin Scorsese and stars
Robert De Niro and Al Pacino) Oct. 24
at the famed Chinese Theatre, just steps
from Oscar’s home, the Dolby Theatre.

ACTRESS

Scarlett Johansson
Marriage Story
With her lead turn in Noah Baumbach’s
dramedy and a supporting part in Jojo
Rabbit, Johansson’s on a roll. But her
name was nowhere to be found on the
Gotham Awards list, even though her co-
star Adam Driver landed a nod.

DIRECTOR

Greta Gerwig
Little Women
Early screenings of Little Women gar-
nered praise online, suggesting Gerwig
could become the first woman to earn
a second best director Oscar nod. She
presented Lina Wertmüller with an hon-
orary Oscar at the Governors Awards.

ACTOR

Matt Damon
Ford v Ferrari
Damon’s chances for a best actor Oscar
nom got tougher when co-star Christian
Bale, who many expected would enter
the supporting actor race, opted to go
for lead. The last time co-stars were
nominated in the category: 34 years ago.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

At BAFTA LA’s Britannia Awards on
Oct. 25, the Get Out Oscar winner was
presented with the John Schlesinger
Britannia Award for Excellence in
Directing in recognition of his elevated
horror blockbuster from the spring.
