Britannia Awards
Beverly Hills, Oct. 25
Oscar Firsts
“She would like to
change the Oscar to a
feminine name,” Isabella
Rossellini (1) said, trans-
lating as Italian auteur
Lina Wertmüller (8)
(who in 1976 became the
Academy’s first female
directing nominee) took
the Ray Dolby Ballroom
stage to accept her honor-
ary Oscar. The Governors
Awards also feted Geena
Davis (10), who called for
gender parity, director
David Lynch (4) and
Cherokee American actor
Wes Studi (9). “I’d simply
like to say, it’s about time,”
Studi said. “I’m really
proud to be here tonight
as the first indigenous
Native American to receive
an Academy Award.”

Fonda in Cuffs
Top talents in film and TV
claimed trophies at BAFTA
L.A.’s Britannia Awards, but
it was an absent honoree
who became the highlight
of the night. Actress and
activist Jane Fonda, who
skipped the Beverly Hilton
event to protest climate
change in D.C., offered her
acceptance via a video of
her yelling, “BAFTA, thank
you!” while getting arrested
outside the Capitol, earn-
ing her roaring applause.
Other honorees included
Phoebe Waller-Bridge (11),
Jackie Chan (19),
Jordan Peele (18), Steve
Coogan (17) and 97-year-
old Norman Lear (15), who
received two standing ova-
tions. — PIYA SINHA-ROY
Chappelle’s Show
“He’s a truth teller and
the funniest person in
comedy today,” Lorne
Michaels (25) said of Mark
Twain Prize honoree Dave
Chappelle (20) from the
Kennedy Center stage.
With comedy stars from
Jon Stewart to Tiffany
Haddish (21) on hand
to celebrate his work,
Chappelle told THR: “I’ll
try to find any excuse to
be around these guys.
They inspire me, they make
me brave, they make me
humble, they make me
work harder, they make me
edit myself by example.”
