S

ix weeks into the season,
there are still two undefeated
teams in the NFL. One is the
New England Patriots. Ho-hum.
The other is ... the San Francisco
49ers? Yes, the same 49ers who
won four, six, two and five games
over the previous four seasons.
On Sunday, they dominated the
Rams, last season’s NFC cham-
pions and a division rival, in Los
Angeles, 20-7 despite being four-
point underdogs.
The most obvious change for
the Niners has been the return of
quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
After a successful cameo filling in
for a suspended Tom Brady with
the Patriots in 2016, Garoppolo
became a hot commodity. The
49ers traded for him and he
played well in five starts at the end
of 2017. Hopes were high for 2018.
But Garoppolo went down that
year in Week 3 with a torn anterior
cruciate ligament, and the Niners
staggered to another poor season.
Coming into this year, the passage
of time and the disappointment
over the injury seemed to lower
the buzz, and few were predicting
a triumphant season. But Garop-
polo has so far lived up to that
2017 promise.
His raw numbers don’t scream
“quarterback of a championship-
quality team.” He ranks 19th
among regulars at the position in
passing yards per game at 233, for
example. He fares better in preci-
sion categories such as comple-
tion percentage (70 per cent,
ranking fourth), and his offensive
line has kept his sack percentage
down to less than 4 per cent.
In general, the team’s offensive
numbers are as solid as its quar-
terback; it ranks 10th in yards per
play and fifth in net yards per
pass. Matt Breida and Raheem
Mostert are both in the top five in
yards per rush. Tight end George
Kittle averages six catches a game
and that total is 84 per cent of the
balls thrown his way. Kittle had
103 yards last week, despite play-
ing with a groin injury.
But it is the team’s defensive
numbers that pop. The Niners are
second behind the Patriots in
yards allowed per play and net
yards per pass. Last year they were
eighth and 14th. Jared Goff had
games with 517 and 395 yards pass-
ing coming into Sunday. The
Niners held him to 78.
On the season, the 49ers have
given up only 64 points in their
five games, an average of 12.8.

VICTORMATHER

VANCOUVERNone of the CFL’s
nine opening-day starting quar-
terbacks will play every game
this season.
The BC Lions say Mike Reilly
underwent surgery for a broken
left wrist on Sunday, meaning
the only opening-day starting
QB to play every game so far this
year will be out for the rest of
the season.
Reilly was hurt Saturday
during the first quarter of B.C.’s
loss in Edmonton against the
Eskimos. The Lions say the
surgery included the insertion of
a small plate held in place with
six screws.
Danny O’Brien replaced Reilly
after the injury and will make
his first start of the season on
Friday against the visiting Sas-
katchewan Roughriders.
The Lions, eliminated from
playoff contention, signed Cana-
dian QB Brandon Bridge on
Tuesday.THECANADIANPRESS

The person spoke on condi-
tion of anonymity Tuesday night
because the Rams hadn’t yet
