The 411: November is National Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Aware-
ness Month. COPD refers to a group of lung diseases. While smoking is the number one cause
of COPD in the U.S., genetics can also contribute to its development. For helpful educational
resources, visit the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute website, nhlbi.nih.gov.
SECRETS TO A GOOD LIFE
Food for the Soul
A former teacher is bringing a
new kind of meal-delivery service
to her South Carolina community
Maria Kelly knew just how to help
when her mother was diagnosed with
cancer. “She was such a fantastic
cook,” says Kelly of her mother, who
passed away in 2010. “I began cooking
for her when she was deep into her
treatments, and I saw the comfort
it gave her.” The then-high school
teacher realized that other patients
may appreciate having healthy dishes
delivered too. She launched AMOR
Healing Kitchen in February 2018.
Each week, teen volunteers and their
mentors take over the kitchen at Johns
Island, South Carolina’s Sweetgrass
Garden, where they make plant-based
meals using organic ingredients. Then
AMOR’s “delivery angels” ferry the
food around town to patients and their
caregivers. “When I was growing
up, my mom involved me in different
service projects,” says Kelly. “It planted
a seed of how important it is to work
with the community and give back.” å
