INSIDE GAME
In theaters Nov. 1
Twelve years ago, ex–NBA referee Tim
Donaghy pleaded guilty to federal felony
charges, admitting he bet on games he
officiated and fed tips to gamblers. Inside
Game chronicles how Donaghy and two
childhood friends took part in the scheme.
Donaghy talked with SI’s Dan Falkenheim
ahead of the film’s release.
SI: What did you think of the movie?
Tim Donaghy: It was embarrassing when we
went through it, and it’s embarrassing to see
the movie and go through it again. But I think
there’s a good message there about choices.
SI: Looking back on it now, do you feel like you
were doing anything wrong at the time?
TD: Absolutely. When you talk about giving out
inside information, I knew at the time it was
wrong. I wish I could turn back time and not
have done it. But unfortunately I can’t. I can
only learn from my past mistakes.
SI: What do you think about the NBA’s
embrace of gambling?
TD: I think any business is going to do what
it can to improve its numbers.
SI: Do you think that being transparent
helps prevent potential scandals?
TD: I don’t think any NBA ref or player
would get involved in [schemes like
mine]. They’re more educated now.
But at some of these colleges, they’re
going to tell some players, You aren’t
going pro; we’ll put 25 grand in
your pocket. That’s where the next
scandal is going to come from.
