This ‘football in cars’
phenomenon took the
world by storm and soon
became an eSports
essential; Rocket League was
Fortnite before Fortnite knew
what it was. Your rocket-propelled
car needs to be hurtled into a
football, with the aim being to
score a goal. Performing tricks
can affect the ball in random ways,
and teamwork is key to dominating
a match. It’s a must-play on PS
Now, with the base game being
complemented by free DLC and
constant updates. As an eSports
title, even four years after release
Rocket League is as relevant as
it’s ever been.

This was SNK’s final
sprite-based fighter
before the developer
embraced 3D, and it now
feels like a celebration of the
series. The visuals are beautiful,
and epitomise the subtle animation
the series has become known for.
But it’s in the key decisions that
TKOF xIII impresses: there’s a
return to the classic three-
character teams as well as
systems poached or reinterpreted
from past King Of Fighters games.
The multi-bar power gauge returns
from KOF ’97, and a version of KOF
xI’s Dream Cancels is included.

This hard-to-come-by
slice of imaginative
platforming is a modern
classic that you really
needs to play. After being turned
into a marionette and then
beheaded, Kutaro’s none too
happy. What follows is a magical
adventure through puppet ‘sets’
as Kutaro seeks to free other
children’s souls and defeat the
Big Bad. New heads can be
collected en route, each altering
Kutaro’s look and movement, and
his massive golden scissors can
be used to cut up enemies,
scenery, and puzzles alike. A
second player can join the fun,
taking control of Kutaro’s cat.

More voxel-based
shooting from the
Swedish developer that
loves to resurrect
old-timey arcade trends. This time
Housemarque turns its retro-gaze
to Defender and reimagines it as a
bullet hell explosion of colour and
speed. Resogun was a launch
game for PS4, and even now it still
impresses. The core gameplay
loop of rescuing humans, battling
enemies, while zipping around a
cylindrical stage that morphs
across three phases ending on a
boss battle is an incredible rush,
especially when you ignite
Overdrive and decimate the
screen, resulting in alien voxels
exploding everywhere.

Killzone 2

Ah, we love the smell of
burning Helghast in the
morning. When Killzone 2
arrived on PS3 in 2009
it finally gave PS3 owners a
first-person shooter worthy of
infatuation. The dark and bleak
sci-fi tale of the democratic ISA
taking the fight to the home
planet of the orange-eyed
villains who attempted to do the
invading in the original Killzone is
one of last-gen’s greatest
shooters. It still looks incredible
today – and when a game can
make the ashen ruins of a
nuclear-blasted city look beautiful,
you know it’s a keeper.

Limbo

Limbo was a game-
changer. Originally
releasing early on in the
indie revival of the last
generation (though this is the
gorgeous PS4 version), it laid a
lot of groundwork for artsy
platformers that would follow. But
forget all that legacy nonsense:
the simple truth is that Limbo is
just a great game. A story told
mostly in darkness and without
dialogue, it uses minimalism to
convey a lot. Great set-pieces are
punctuated by tough-though-not-
too-tough puzzles (the spider that
chases you will stick with you), and
it doesn’t outstay its welcome.

Mafia ii

Welcome to empire Bay, a
city on the east Coast of
America torn between
several crime families,
from the Mafia to the Triad, and
even an Irish Mob. The early-1950s
setting provides a fresh-feeling
open world (even if there isn’t
loads to do there) and the sort of
videogame story you don’t see that
often. Despite its open-world
design, it’s quite story-focused,
with cutscenes taking you from
mission to mission. While the world
might not have aged well, the
crime story, as well as the classic
guns, give you a reason to revisit
empire Bay even today.

The final game in the
trilogy might not be the
best one – but it’s still a
great sci-fi horror game.
Detracting a mite from the horror
was the introduction of online
co-op, which at the time of writing
is still available – making it one of
the best co-op experiences on PS
Now. And it still has some creepy
scares in store. The Necromorph
enemies feel truly alien and
unpredictable. even being
dismembered doesn’t always stop
these monsters. But what eases
the terror more than having a
co-op buddy join the fight with you?
