blacksburg, va. — Fans who
attended Virginia Te ch’s matchup
with North Carolina certainly got
their money’s worth Saturday.
In a game that needed six over-
times and took more than four
hours, Virginia Te ch finally put
away the Ta r Heels when third-
team quarterback Quincy Patter-
son II’s two-point conversion run
in the sixth o vertime p ropelled t he
Hokies to a wild, 43-41 victory in
the l ongest game i n ACC history.
The victory let the Hokies (5-2,
2-2) keep pace in the race for the
Coastal Division crown and kept

the Tar Heels (3-4, 2-2) from jump-
ing to the t op of the division.
“I’m just proud of those kids,”
Virginia Te ch Coach Justin Fuente
said. “It goes back to a couple of
weeks ago [after a 45-10 loss to
Duke], and we had to look our-
selves in the mirror and talk about
how we would handle tough situa-
tions. We were c ertainly in our fair
share o f them tonight.”
Both teams squandered oppor-
tunities to prevail in earlier over-
time periods: Virginia Te ch kicker
Brian Johnson missed
game-winning attempts from 41
and 4 2 yards, and North Carolina’s
Noah Ruggles missed from 35
yards and had a 44-yard attempt
blocked.
The game marked the debut of
college football’s new overtime
rules, which give each team a two-

point try after the f ourth overtime.
Patterson played t he m ajority of
the second half for the Hokies
after starting quarterback Hen-
don Hooker went down with an
injury late in the first half and
Fuente elected to replace backup
Ryan Willis with Patterson after
three series.
Patterson rushed for 122 yards
on 21 carries and also threw for
54 yards and a TD.
“A fter Hendon got the job, and
he played a great game against
Miami, it’s really easy to get down
on yourself and think your shot is
never going to come,” Patterson
said. “But I j ust had to stay in that
zone of preparing like I was the
starter, and today was that day
th at I got to play quarterback, so
that was pretty cool.”

RESULTS AND BOX SCORES

BY AVA WALLACE

To watch Navy quarterback
Malcolm Perry run is a dazzling
thing. The senior is slight
enough to make the defense
regret leaving even the narrow-
est of gaps, and when Perry takes
flight, it’s a sight: His torso and
gold-helmeted head don’t seem
to move while sturdy legs churn
away, and neither a hitch in his
step nor any loss of speed is
discernible when he changes
direction mid-sprint.
Perry helped the Midshipmen
to a 35-3 win over South Florida
on Saturday at Navy-Marine
Corps Memorial Stadium, giving
Navy its first three-game
winning streak since the start of
the 2 017 season. He led the
nation’s top rushing offense with
188 yards and two touchdowns
on 22 carries, his third 150-yard
rushing game this year.
Ye t after Saturday’s win,
which marked the halfway point
of the season, it’s clear that Perry
has competition for the most
impressive part of this Navy
team.
The Mids’ defense may not
look as pretty in motion, but the
revitalized group has played just
as big of a part in what has been
a rebound season for a program
that amassed just three wins in
2018.
“That’s as dominant of a
defensive performance — I’ve
been in this stadium 22 years,
man, and that’s as dominant of a
defensive performance, a gainst a
really good team, that I’ve seen
in a long time,” Navy Coach Ken
Niumatalolo said.
A few introductory stats from
Saturday’s win: It was the first
game since the 2013 Armed Forc-
es Bowl against Middle Te nnes-
see in which the Mids’ defense
didn’t allow a touchdown. Navy
had three turnovers, off which
South Florida only scraped to-
gether three points. And the
Midshipmen now have 17 sacks,
five of which came Saturday. In
13 games last season, they had
just 10.
Navy (5-1, 3-1 American Ath-
letic) outgained Coach Charlie
Strong’s Bulls 457-264, with 434
of the Mids’ yards coming on the
ground, and the defense held
South Florida to just 3.9 yards
per play, below its season aver-
age of 5.4.
“They kept us in the game,”
Perry said. “They kept the
momentum on our side.”

Zoom out past Saturday’s win,
and it’s apparent that the de-
fense has been a crucial factor in
Navy’s strong start. A new set of
coaches — first-year defensive
coordinator Brian Newberry is
one of five new assistants on
defense — is primarily to thank;
the newcomers turned around a
unit that was r anked 103rd i n the
Football Bowl Subdivision last
year in total defense.
Entering Saturday, Navy
ranked 16th in total defense and
ninth in rushing defense.
The win over South Florida
(3-4, 1-2) came at a critical time.
The Mids are entering a gnarly
thicket in the latter half of their
season with a strong Tulane
team arriving in Annapolis next
week and a game at Notre Dame
and against undefeated SMU
still on the docket.
Navy will need its defense to
set the tone the way it did
Saturday, when it forced South
Florida to go t hree-and-out on its
opening drive. Newberry’s de-
fense glittered in the first half,
looking like a new crew com-
pared with last year’s wispy
bunch, even though most of the
players are the same.
The Mids tackled clinically
and had no problem patching
over Navy’s few offensive gaffes
— despite Perry’s exploits on the
ground, he completed none of
his three pass attempts and
threw two interceptions, both of
which came in the second quar-
ter. South Florida couldn’t con-
vert either into a touchdown.
The first interception came
with just under five minutes left
in the first half when KJ Sails
picked off Perry and p ut the Bulls
on Navy’s 21. The Mids’ defense
allowed just five yards in three
plays, and South Florida settled
for a 33-yard field goal for its

only points of the game.
The second interception came
with just under a minute left in
the half when Nick Roberts
grabbed a pass intended for
Ryan Mitchell. The defense
saved that one, too, when fresh-
man safety Chelen Garnes inter-
cepted Jordan McCloud at the
Navy 22 and the Midshipmen
jogged into the locker room with
their 21-3 lead intact, thanks to
two rushing touchdowns and a
score off a trick play in which CJ
Williams threw a 23-yard pass to
OJ Davis.
South Florida ended the half
with 116 yards of offense.
“I feel l ike last year there was a
lot of pointing fingers whenever
something went wrong. Like, if
I’m a linebacker, ‘Oh, it’s the
D-line’s fault,’ or the corners are
like, ‘Oh, it’s the linebackers’
fault’ — whatever it may be,”
senior linebacker Diego Fagot
said. “Whereas, I feel like we’re
more of a tighter unit. It’s just
awesome to play together, be-
cause we have that confidence
that, ‘Okay, they might get the
ball on the 30, but they’re not
going to score on us.’ It’s d efinite-
ly a different feel whenever we’re
on the field or together.”
After the blips late in the first
half, Perry added a 21-yard
touchdown run early in the
fourth quarter, and Tazh Maloy
notched a 26-yard touchdown
run minutes later.
But the game belonged to the
defense.
“We’re a tightknit group, the
defense,” senior Jackson Pittman
said. “If you look at the film,
there’s 11 guys running to the
ball, surrounding the running
back or whoever’s got the ball...
and, you know, it’s fun. We’re
having fun. We’re loving it.”

Perry, defense propel Mids

BY HANK KURZ JR.

charlottesville — Bronco
Mendenhall was at a loss to
explain how Virginia’s game
against Duke on Saturday turned
into a blowout.
“I thought it would come
down to the last possession, so
holy cow,” he said.
Bryce Perkins ran for three
touchdowns and Wayne Ta ulapa-
pa ran for two as the Cavaliers
rolled, 48-14, for their fifth con-
secutive victory against the Blue
Devils. Virginia forced five turn-
overs and has forced 15 in the
teams’ past four meetings.

“Maybe we’re just in the right
place at the right time when we
play Duke,” defensive lineman
Eli Hanback said.
Hanback had one of three
fumble recoveries for the Cava-
liers, who scored 20 points off
takeaways.
Joe Reed also returned a kick-
off 95 yards for a touchdown, his
second scoring return of the
season and the program-record
fifth of his career, and Brian
Delaney kicked two field goals a
week after his three field goals
accounted for Virginia’s only
points in a 17-9 loss at Miami.
This time, Virginia had no
issues once inside the opponent’s
25, which Ta ulapapa credited to
a “change of mind-set.”
“Bryce can’t do everything.
He’s amazing in every single way,

but he can’t do this by himself,”
Ta ulapapa said.
The Cavaliers (5-2, 3-1), whose
loss a week ago dropped them
into a tie with Duke and North
Carolina in the ACC’s Coastal
Division, regained the upper
hand on the back of a defense
that set them up for four scoring
drives of 34 yards or fewer.
The Blue Devils (4-3, 2 -2) came
in averaging more than 40 points
over their previous five games
but managed only a 36-yard
scoring pass from Quentin Har-
ris to Scott Bracey against Vir-
ginia’s first-team defense.
Duke managed to gain just 166
yards in the first three quarters
before Chris Katrenick replaced
Harris for the game’s final 15
minutes.
