DON’T FORGET TO SIGN UP:
To bid with an auction house, you need to
open an account. Once opened, register for
the sale, establishing how you wish to bid.
The most direct way is to ask for a paddle
and to bid yourself in the saleroom, tasting
the action and breathing the atmosphere. If
you wish to remain anonymous or cannot
attend the sale in person, you can bid over
the telephone with an auction house repre-
sentative. Some auction houses also offer
online bidding.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK: It takes
time to understand the terminology and dy-
namics of an auction. Watch an auction on You-
Tube or follow live auctions online.

EVERYONE NEEDS A CEILING:
Once you’ve established the market value of
the pieces you like, you will know how much
you should bid. If the piece is truly rare or

holds sentimental value, you may wish to
bid more aggressively or above the mar-
ket value. Make sure you are familiar
with buyers’ premium due on purchases
and any taxes applicable on top of the
hammer price.

THE MORNING AFTER: If you
have been successful in your bid you
will receive an invoice following the sale
