PIAGET THE ROSE
When the Geneva watchmakers
expanded into making their first
jewellery line, nature was a key
inspiration for their designs. Since the
1960s one flower in particular became
prevalent, and it was no coincidence
that this was Yves Piaget’s favourite
bloom. “I have always been in love wi h
roses, fascinated by the work
breeders, whose imagination is m
by their absolute discipline,” he
is the most universal flower.” Be
of his passion for horticulture
his childhood days, in 1982 a styl
fuchsia rose peonies was named aft
him, much to his delight. Playin
muse in the Piaget workshop, over
100 creations have stemmed from
this flora, from sautoir necklaces
to secret cuf watches, carved out
of chalcedony or set in a lacework
of diamonds and pink sapphires. The
more recent extension of the floral
fantasy has been the ‘Limelight Garden
Party’, a set of precious bouquets seen
on Bar Refaeli and Jessica Chastain
and photographed in 2011 by British
photographer Tim Walker.

VAN CLEEF& ARPELS
THE FOUR-LEAF
CLOVER
In 1968 the French bijouterie played a
winning hand by introducing the four-leaf
clover in a line of jewels called Alhambra.
The starting point came from the legacy of
Jacques Arpels, who would pluck the lucky
af for his staf, gifting it with a poem as a
oken of appreciation. The title Alhambra
had Arabic connotations too—named
after a palace in Spain, it added an
exotic twist to the Place Vendôme
portfolio. The bulbous motif was inlaid
in many materials, like mother of pearl,
turquoise, onyx, wood and even malachite,
a green stone that caught the eye of
Princess Grace of Monaco.Gossip Girl’s
Kelly Rutherford favoured the floret on
and of screen and Mariah Carey has been
spotted wearing several styles too. Closer
to home, Natasha Poonawalla paired hers
with a Herve Leger number in 2008.
