the ’90s

ergy of the ’70s. Sure, it had its high-
lights: the Big Six—the most beautiful
women on the planet who were elevat-
ed to supermodel status; the ‘Rachel’
haircut that every girl and her friends
wanted; and nothing got between the
world’s most famous waif and her
Calvins—but as far as beauty looks
went, most remained in cringe-worthy
territory. So when a few of the trends
hit their second wind on the spring/
summer 2016 runways, more than a
few (full) eyebrows were raised.
Thankfully, in their resurrected,
restrained version, I’ve actually man-
aged to lay the ghosts of my teenage
past and enjoy a few of the trends in

fan. Unfortunately, the ‘grown-ups’
of the era were sporting severely
crimped hair, fountain heads (that I
wore as a toddler) and lips that looked
like they’d been forced to ingest
schoolyard mud pies—so I couldn’t be
faulted for my inspiration!
As far as beauty’s stellar decades go,
the ’90s did not match up to the femi-
nine charm of the ’60s or the wild en-

BRICKLAYER’S
LIP
The mud brown,
highly metallic (almost
radioactive) lip that
was sported religiously
through the decade
got a refreshing matte
makeover for 2016. In
its new avatar (championed largely
by Jenner, whose Lip Pouts sell out
in under three minutes), it’s worn with
voluminous lashes, a sleek middle part
and a full brow.
