Faux Real
For the ultimate perennial blooms, one word:
plastics. Since 1979, Cec LePage has been sculpting
acrylic into various artful objets. She started her
career in fashion, creating funky plastic bangles and
jagged polygon slivers for earrings. (Robin Wright
memorably wore a pair of Cec LePage earrings in a
story celebrating her breakout role in The Princess
Bride, Vogue, January 1988.) In 1990 LePage swapped
jewelry for decor, but ironically it was fashion that led
her to artificial flowers, when Burberry commissioned
250 acrylic calla lilies and anthuriums to decorate a
new store in Japan. Ever since, the Canadian-born
LePage has carved her medium of choice into phyllo
pastry–thin layers, molding them into fantastic florals
in vibrant colors with coordinating vases. “I don’t
really follow color trends; right now I’m crazy about
indigo! I don’t know where it comes from,” she muses.
Don’t look to LePage for true-to-life arrangements;
her bouquets are highly unnaturalistic and, of course,
delightfully maintenance-free.—lilah ramzi
