Vogue June 2019

(Dana P.) #1
This month, Nike celebrates
the FIFA Women’s World Cup
by teaming up with four visionary designers—
Marine Serre, Yoon Ahn of Ambush,
Christelle Kocher of Koché, and Erin Magee
of MadeMe—to create couture versions of
classic soccer uniforms. The collection’s
release marks the start of the tournament
(held this year in France from June 7 to July 7)
as well as the twentieth anniversary of the U.S.
women’s win at the 1999 World Cup, and will
be available globally through NikeLab. Each
designer injected her own signature vision
into the kits: Ahn’s design for a jacket and
Flyknit bra borrows from the silhouette of a
traditional Japanese happi coat, while Magee,
a former collegiate footballer, took inspiration
from Nike’s namesake goddess of victory.
Serre’s bodysuit and matching sports bra
feature her signature moon print mixed in with
the Nike swoosh, and Kocher—a fan of and
former collaborator with Paris Saint-Germain
F.C.—used patchwork to symbolize the unity
and diversity of the game. Even with visually
different designs for each of their uniforms,
the four women share one common goal in
this project: empowerment. “I think sports has
something in common with
fashion,” Kocher says. “They
both can help women feel
stronger, more confident, and
powerful.”—BROOKE BOBB
