AMI AND AYA,
THE MATCHMAKERS

It’s hard to miss 30-year old twins Ami and Aya Suzuki. ‘Amiaya’
are easily recognised by their fuchsia hairdos and matching rain-
bow ensembles and their work for Moschino [tv] H&M and Fendi.
The pink hair... How did it all start?
Aya: Ami originally did pink, so when we thought about match-
ing our looks, pink twins seemed catchy and cute. We will stay
pink for a while because we want people all over the world to as-
sociate pink twins with Amiaya.
Do you share and borrow from each other’s closets?
Ami: We live together but our closets are separate. We don’t
usually share our clothes either—we just have identical items,
or the same thing in a different colour. There is no KonMari
(Marie Kondo) in the closet!
Trends you’re really into right now?
Ami: I like colour and I’m into neon right now. It feels nice to
mix sporty, luxurious and grunge.
Aya: I like fashion that is fun and interesting to look at, so I
fi nd colours and layers more expressive, unlike minimalism.
You’ve been spotted on the frow quite often. Which
shows have been the most memorable?
Ami: The fi rst time I saw Gucci in Milan I had goose
bumps—thefreeexpression, the world view, the realness
withelementsof fantasy.— Rishna Shah

BEAB ÅKERLUND,THEMADHATTER 21

Part-time stylist to red-carpet chameleons like Beyoncé and Lady Gaga, and full-time costume de-
signer, Åkerlund is a self-confessed Goth (the New York Times reported that her twin daughters
“rode in black strollers with skulls”). She sums up her life in fi ve maximalist commandments.

  • “The most prized possession in my wardrobe is a Vivienne Westwood baby-print corset from
    autumn/winter 1992-93.”

  • “Fashion needs more creativity today. I’m a little bored with what is going on right now, which
is why emerging designers excite me.”

  • “I have a real problem with buying sunglasses and shoes... I must have over 100 pairs of both.”

  • “Marilyn Monroe and Grace Jones—the icons I look to for attitude, style and overall awesomeness.”

  • “My style is an extension of my personality, and that comes in various shapes, sizes and moods.”
