October 15, 2019We announce the passing of
this amazing lady, Jean Smart
(née Bodkin) in her 71st year at
the Campbell House Hospice in
Collingwood. Family and friends
are devastated by this sad news.
Daughter of Florence (Gardiner)
and the late Leigh Bodkin, Jean
will be forever missed by her
husband John, brother Doug
Bodkin (Lorraine) of Bothwell,
ON., and sister Loretta Johnson
also of Bothwell. Beloved by
mother-in-law Helen and the late
John Smart, sister-in-law Darla
and Bill McDonell, sister-in-law
Cheryl Brown and Colin Nimmons.
Jean was born in Chatham,
Ontario and grew up on the
family farm near Thamesville,
Ontario. A graduate of the College
of Pharmacy at the University
of Toronto. Jean started in retail
pharmacy in Mississauga, and
then became the Directorof
Pharmacy at Collingwood General
and Marine Hospital. In 1979, Jean
realized a life- long dream when
she purchased Heslip’s Pharmacy
in Creemore, ON., and established
her own business known as
Creemore Village Pharmacy.
Jean served Creemore and the
surrounding area for 35 years until
she took retirement in 2014 due
to her on-going battle against
cancer. Initially diagnosed in 1995
with bowel cancer, Jean later,
with dignity and courage, battled
liver cancer (2007), followed
by lung cancer (2010) and most
recently breast cancer in 2016
and 2018.
Jean met future husband John
on a blind date while attending
her very first hockey game. They
later married on December 15,- Jean had many interests
including cooking, reading,
curling, baseball and hockey. She
enjoyed the unique opportunity
of attending some major sporting
events such as the World Curling
Championships, World Junior
Hockey Championships and the
first ever Baseball World Series
played in Canada won by the
Toronto Blue Jays.
Jean was also passionate about
travelling. In recent years, she
particularly enjoyed renting a
self-catering cottage in North
Yorkshire, England. It was during
these holidays to the United
Kingdom that she was able to
make new friendships and meet
several prominent authors at
Book Festivals that she and John
attended. Jean was a tremendous
supporter of all things Creemore,
including the Creemore Tree
Committee, Creemore Minor
Hockey, Creemore Medical
Centre, Creemore Minor Soccer,
Creemore Figure Skating Club,
Creemore Legion, Creemore
Curling Club, Purple Hills Arts
& Heritage Society, and the
Creemore Horticultural Society.
We would like to thank the
compassionate and professional
care provided by the staff at Royal
Victoria Hospital (RVH) in Barrie,
ON., and also at Campbell House
Hospice in Collingwood, ON., and
in particular Dr. Lorna MacDougall
who was always available when
she was most needed.
Visitation will be on Friday,
October 18th from 6:00 p.m. to
8:00 p.m. at St. John’s United
Church. A Celebration of Life
service will take place at St. John’s
United Church in the picturesque
Village of Creemore on Saturday,
October 19, 2019 at 1:00 p.m.
Reception to follow at the St.
John’s United Church Hall.

DEATHSLAURA FAYE STEPHENSONFaye died peacefully, at home
with family on October 16, 2019
in her 91st year. She was born
and raised in Russell, Ontario, the
fourth of six children of the late
Laura and Stanley Stephenson.
Predeceased by her three
sisters, Norma Stanley, Edna
McLean ( Bill) and Helen Jackman
(Frank), her sister-in-law Marjorie
Stephenson and her nephew
Richard Stephenson. Loved and
loving sister of her brothers,
George (Mike) and Ray (Jo Ann).

(Jenny) Stanley, James (Nadia)
Stanley, Ann (Dave) Schappert,
Barbara (Dale) Doran , Janet(Larry)

Faye attended Queen’s University
where she obtained her Bachelor
of Commerce. She wentonto
achieve the Chartered Accountant
designation and was the 29th
woman to becomeaC.A.in
Ontario. She has had a remarkable
career throughout her life. After her
official retirement, she continued
working in Toronto in a self
employed capacity, specializing
in the fields of estates, trusts and
tax matters. She loved her work,
the challenges and the results
achieved. She worked tirelessly to
serve her clients, many who have
remained wonderful friends.
Above all, she cared for and loved
her family and friends to whom
she was devoted. She had a
wonderful relationship with God.
She leaves us with cherished
memories and has touched us all
with her kindness and wisdom.
We are grateful for the goodness
and joy she brought to us. She has
lived a full, happy and good life
with many successes. The time
came for her to say goodbye and
go, wishing love and happiness to
all of us. We will miss her.
Cremation has taken place. A
private celebration will take place
at a later date.

1933 - 2019A loving, intelligent, and fun-loving
woman with a flair for telling stories,
Nancy passed away peacefully
on October 17, 2019 surrounded
by family. Much loved mother of
Lynn (Ben McNally), Laurie (Andy
Chisholm), Greg (Sarah). Adored
“Nanny” to Yeats, Danielle, Rupert,
and Titus McNally; Thomas and
Lauren Chisholm; Esper and Noah
Thomson. Loving sister to Paul
(Maureen), Ken (Nancy); sister-in-
law to Dick and Heather Thomson.
Pre-deceased by parents, Marjorie
and Ewart Fockler.
Nancy received aBAfrom
Victoria College, UofT and an OCE
Teaching Certificate. She taught
high school until she marriedTom
Thomson, when they moved to
Boston where he was at school.
There she tutored children with
learning disabilities, something
she picked up again later when
her own children were in school.
She loved to teach and she
loved to learn. She spent years
on the boards of many diverse
organizations, from the Festival
Singers of Canada and the Shaw
Festival, to GSW and Maclean
Hunter, and many others. In 1979
she wrote, developed, marketed
and taught a course called “Nancy
Thomson: Investing for Women.”
It was the first of its kind in
Canada, teaching classes of only
women, taught by only women,
about money and how to invest it.
The company was a huge success
and Nancy opened branches in
cities across the country.
As wonderful as all this worldly
success was, her dearest held
memories were in the realmof
family and friendship. Her study
group friends and their decades
of intellectual exploration, the
Doncliffe Darts (you know who
you are), her bridge friends,
Muskoka friends, and most of all
her loving family. She developed
a deep bond with each of her
grandchildren and cherished
them all as individuals. Summers
in Muskoka were treasured. She
loved a good party.
Nancy and the family would
like to thank Dr. Wong and the
wonderful team at Sunnybrook,
Wing B, fourth floor, especially
nurse Laura Stevens, for taking
such good care.
There will be a celebrationof
Nancy’s life at Lawrence Park
Community Church, 2180 Bayview
Ave. on Wednesday, October 23rd
at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers,
please consider planting a tree.

September 20, 2019 in Victoria,
BC. Thane was born in Toronto on
February27,1939toRalphandNeta
Waldie. He grew up in Ottawa,
along with his three siblings.
Thane met his wife, Helen
McFarlane, sixty years ago this
summer and they married in 1961.
A graduate of Queens Chemical
Engineering, Class of 1960,
Thane’s fulfilling career took his
family around the world. They
enjoyed their time in seven cities
in Canada, as well as Texas (twice),
England, and The Netherlands.
Thane was predeceased by his
brother (Hugh) and his daughter
(Christine), and survived by his
wife Helen, his son and daughter-
in-law Cameron and Paige, his
two sisters Sharon and Marcia,
his sister-in-law Elaine, and his
brother-in-law Terry. Funeral
services will be held at the First
Unitarian Church of Victoria at 3
p.m. on Saturday, October 26th.

October 14, 2019John L. Wassenaar passed
away peacefully at his mother’s
residence on October 14,- Survived by his parents,
Dr. Willem Wassenaar and
Rosemary Wassenaar - Ostrowski,
brothers Christopher and Daniel
Wassenaar, sister, Dr. Catherine
Wassenaar and stepmother Dr
Hsiao-Ming Jung.
John was diagnosed with Stage
Four Colon cancer in the Spring
of 2013. John relentlessly fought
the diseasethroughout many
surgeries, dozens of rounds of
chemotherapy and radiation,
and all the while pursuing his
passion for stock trading. Not to
be deterred by his initial cancer
diagnosis, John even went so far
as completing his third examfor
the Certified Market Technician
designation while receiving a
chemotherapy infusion.
John grew up in the North
Leaside neighborhood and was a
graduate of St. Michaels College
School in Toronto. John went on
to become an American division
one collegiate scholarship track
and field athlete, distinguishing
himself academically by obtaining
a perfect score on the senior
investment exam during his
graduation year from the Wallace
E. Carroll School of Management
at Boston College, Boston
Massachusetts.
John was a Trader with Virtu
Financial, formerly known as ITG
Financial. Before he joined Virtu,
John held trading positions in the
Toronto, New York, Connecticut,
and Bermuda offices of Investors
Bank and Trust, CF Global,
National Bank Financial and
Olympia Capital International.
When he was not stalking the
trading floor, you could find
John out on a fishing Charter
somewhere warm or cheering on
his nieces and nephews in their
latest adventures.
A Memorial Service of Celebration
will be held at the First Christian
Reformed Church of Toronto,
57 Taunton Rd., on Saturday,
November 2, 2019 at 5:30 p.m.,
with Pastor Thyra VanKeeken
officiating. A reception will follow
immediately after the service.
