United we stand
US president Harry S Truman addresses delegates at the United Nations Conference on
International Organization in San Francisco. On the last day of the conference, 26 June 1945,
the UN Charter was signed – completing one of the primary goals of Truman’s predecessor,
Franklin D Roosevelt, at the Yalta Conference. Not all of Roosevelt’s aims from Yalta were
realised: a year later it was clear Stalin had no intention of loosening his grip on eastern Europe
