This technique is used to convey drama. The sidelit face does not
progress gradually from light, to gray, to dark. Instead, it’s more
abrupt. This stark juxtaposition of light and dark adds an intensity to
the mood. This is a personal favorite of mine. It’s also a popular
movie effect, frequently captured by storyboard artists.
