BIG PICTURE

Shiofune Kannon-ji,

Tokyo, Japan
Tokyo isn’t simply an urban jungle — its
distinct districts throw up all manner of
natural secrets, from looming mountains
to secluded gardens. Shiofune Kannon-ji
Temple, built during the 7th century, is one
of those secrets. When the rainy season
comes, thousands of azaleas and hydrangeas
bloom at once, and the temple turns into a
little piece of technicolour paradise. I woke
up at 4am, and arrived here just ater sunrise
to watch the shadows receding, revealing a
sea of colourful lowers. A delicate fragrance
of burning incense made this moment even
more relaxing and unforgettable.
