“I was really into musicals
and watched West Side
Story and Singin’ in the
Rain over and over. Now,
I’m going through a Daddy’s
Home phase. It’s brilliant!”
“When I
was little,
Watership
Down was my
favourite book,
so it is always
in my heart.”
“While filming His Dark
Materials, me and Lewin
Lloyd [who plays Lyra’s
best friend, Roger] would
always watch Stranger
Things at the end of the
day. That was our thing.”
“My playlists are weird. I love Billie
Eilish and the Hamilton soundtrack.
Then I have Pink Floyd, Fugees,
Rosalía... and lots of Will Smith.”

“I really admire the
careers of Olivia
Colman, Meryl Streep,
and Jennifer Lawrence.
I love them all!”
“There’s a really cool
vintage market in Madrid
on Sundays called El
Rastro. I like buying hoop
earrings from there.”
“Mimosa & Cardamom
by Jo Malone [£98] is
my most-loved scent.
My mum uses it and it
reminds me of her.”
For Dafne Keen, performing runs in the family.
Her British father, Will Keen, and Spanish
mother, Maía Fernández Ache, are both actors
- “they knew I was going to be an actress before
I did,” the 14-year-old says, with a confidence
that belies her age, on set for Vogue. Keen grew
up between Madrid and London, and landed
her first role, aged nine, in Spanish drama The
Refugees. But it was her part as the lovably feral
Laura in Logan, the final instalment of Hugh
Jackman’s Wolverine trilogy, that got her
noticed. Even so, her new lead role – as Lyra in
the latest adaptation of Philip Pullman’s beloved
His Dark Materials – is one she didn’t dare
expect. “I showed up to the audition only having
read half the book,” she confesses. “I thought,
‘I’m not going to get it anyway.’” The most
expensive BBC series ever, filming for the
second season is already well under way. It’s all
just the beginning for Keen, who wants “to do
everything – comedy, drama, musical theatre,
film, TV. That’s my dream.” Amel Mukhtar
