We spoke to Milka from Cake
Pirate about the super spooky but
incredible Americake Horror Story
collab.
Tell us about your collaboration
Some of you might remember our first
edition in 2018, when our little group
of sugar artists from all over the world
decided to take you all into a world
of beautiful, bizarre and fascinating
sugar art. Our Americake Horror Story.
What happened afterwards was crazy.
We didn’t expect all the feedback we
got after our reveal. And the craziest
moment was when we found out
our collaboration was nominated for
the Cake Masters Magazine Awards
- Being one of the finalists among
such amazing collaborations was
pretty crazy. But you know what was
even better? At this point, we were
already working on our second, but
last, edition. Because the group was
carried by such a euphoric spirit after
our reveal, we did it again. And here
we are again with our small but high-
quality reminiscence to the famous
series, for one final and last edition
of our collaboration. As last year,
we did not have many rules except
being a good team, keeping our work
confidential until our reveal, having fun
doing something different than most
of us do in the daily cake businesses,
being brave by stepping out of our
normal cake comfort zones and trying
something new and believing our
pieces will tell their story without
any decoration. That’s why the whole
appearance of our collaboration is
kept simple. I am a purist and didn’t
want to have any additional decoration
elements because I believe our pieces
don’t need that. Each of them tells its
story all alone.
What inspired you to do this theme?
Last year, it was me being a huge fan
of the series. And I still am a huge
American Horror Story fan. Its special
aesthetic is still unique. But this time,
the inspiration was the group. After
the reveal, everyone was so euphoric
and so many members contacted me
and asked to do it again. So here we are
again. But this time, it is really our final
edition. We had such amazing pieces
during both seasons, I think our story
is told and we should leave space for
other amazing collaborations to appear.
Tell us about a few of the pieces that
have been made
We had even more diversity
than last year from fantastic
busts and figures, flower
art, cupcakes, cookies and
cakes - everything you love
in sugar art. For me, it’s
impossible to point out a
piece because each tells
such a strong story from inspiration
to the final piece. I accompanied each
artist’s journey and can only kneel
down in front of the whole group,
saying a big thank you to all of them for
taking time and being part of our story
again.
How many members are in your
collaboration and how did you
decide on this group of people?
35 people. The group was basically the
same as in 2018, with some new people
who perfectly completed our little cake
squad. What is most important to me is
everyone who was with us in 2018 and
2019 is part of our Americake Horror
Story family. It’s about the whole
journey. That’s why I made individual
profile pictures for all our members –
no matter if they were able to deliver
this year again.
Did anything go wrong during the
process?
Yes. Something I still feel a little bit
embarrassed about. For some reason,
I forgot to add two of our members
into our new group. And they forgot to
say they wanted to be a part again. But
luckily, I realised it soon enough and the
incredible artists made the impossible
possible and finished their pieces. I
can’t thank them enough. Besides that,
we had nothing go wrong. Prolonging
the due and reveal dates doesn’t count
because we had no special date planned
for the reveal so it was okay to give the
group more time.
If you were to do it again, what would
you do differently?
Like last year, nothing. Again, I am
seriously touched about the positive
spirit this group has. This is exactly how
I imagine teamwork should look like.
