Colonel (USAF,retired) Bruce “BigFella” MacLennan, 84, of Alexandria,VA,passed away on
September 10, 2019, after battling cancer for four years.Hewas preceded in death by his
wife of 53 years,Eileen Crawley MacLennan, 83, who passed away on August 17, 2019, of
arteriolosclerosis and complications.
Bruce,born in Quincy,MAtoAlger and Virginia MacLennan in 1935, graduated from Braintree
(MA) High School, Thayer Academy,and The University of New Hampshire.Hejoined The
AirForce through ROTC in April, 1959, and begana30-year career,fulfilling his childhood
ambition of flying high-performance fighter aircraft, culminating in command of USAFE’s
first F-5 Fighter Aggressor Squadron. He served three tours in Southeast Asia in the 1960s,
including two tours in The F-4 Phantom, earning two Distinguished Flying Crosses.Colonel
MacLennan retired from TheWeapons and Plans Division at The Pentagon in 1989. He was
predeceased by his brother,Everett, and is survived by his brother,John, and five nephews
and nieces.
EileenFern Crawley,born in Pittsburgh toPatrick and Cecelia Crawley in 1936, grew up in
Southern California. She began her career asadance instructor at Arthur Murray and as a
professional model. In 1958, she was accepted into The American Airlines Flight Attendant
program and quickly advanced to become one of the youngest Stewardess Supervisors at
American Airlines.Bruce and Eileen married in July 1966. She successfully balanced two
careers for 23 years asaSupervisor at American and as an AirForce Officer’swife.She
continued to fly as The Senior Attendant in theWashington-National area, retiring in 2003
after 45 years of service.Inretirement, Eileen took her love of Lhasa Apso dogs,which she
had bred and shown for many years as Benji-LinKennels,tothe next phase—stewarding and
judging, becoming one of the more active judges in The Non-Sporting Group.Eileen remained
active in the dog show world untilastroke in November 2017. She was predeceased by her
brother,Donald, and is survived by her brother,William, and two nephews and one niece.
Plans for internment and commitment services at Arlington National Cemetery are yet to be
finalized. In lieu of flowers,donations in memory of Bruce may be directed to the AirForce

Yetthe position he most enjoyed was teach-
ing marine engineering at the Naval Acade-
my.Mort‘s final Navy assignment was Head,
Current Plans and Policy Branch in the Office
of the Chief of Naval Operations
Captain Neely was awarded the Bronze Star,
the Joint Services Commendation Medal, and
two Meritorious Medals.
On retirement Mort joined the investment
banking firm of Alex Brown&Sons inWash-
ington, and later,with his wife Adaline,
engaged inarewarding antiques business.
One of the activities in his retirement of
which he was most proud was serving as
Chairman of the Investment Fund of the
Diocese ofWashington andTr easurer of the
Episcopal Diocese,having been recruited for
this job by Bishop JohnWalker.Ashead
of the Investment Committee,hevisited all
88 parishes in the Diocese and achieved a
significant increase in participation.
Mort is survived by his wife of 51 years,
Adaline; three children, James Rowe
(Suellen), Jennifer Blanchard (Daniel), and
Morton Neely (Ann); and eight grandchildren,
Amanda, Mackenzie,William, and Charles
Rowe; Rachel, Rebecca and Daniel Blan-
chard; andJames Neely.
Within the family,Mort was often referred
to as the “Rock of Gibraltar.”Known for
his unwavering loyalty,integrity,and love of
family,hewill be greatly missed and his
legacy cherished. In lieu of flowers the family

GUY MORTON NEELY, JR.
Mort, as he was known, died of pancreatic
cancer at his home in Potomac,MD,on
August 22, 2019. He had lived in Potomac for
the past 46 years with his wife,the former
Adaline Blount Rowe of Wilson, NC,whom he
married in 1968.
Born on October 31, 1927, inWashington, DC,
he was the son of Guy Morton and Mildred
Neely.Hewasalifelong resident of the
Washington area, having attended Roosevelt
High School before being appointed to the
U.S.Naval Academy in Annapolis,Maryland.
After graduating in 1949 Mort begana28-
year Navy career.Highlights included serving
as commanding officer of the LST USS
Lawrence County and destroyer USS FloydB.
Parks,commander of Destroyer Division 72,
and commander of Destroyer Squadrons 23
and 9.
Other significant posts included tours as aide
to Commander Seventh Fleet, Commander-
in-ChiefU.SNavalForces in Europe,and
Commander-in-Chief AlliedForces Southern
Europe.Healso served as White House aide
to President Eisenhower.

Passed away peacefully at home during the
early morning of June 14, 2019. He was 94
years old. Charles wasatrue gentleman who
will be missed but always remembered. Born
October 5, 1924, in Conowingo,Maryland, to
CharlesW.Drew and Florence Dotson Drew
who lived in Rising Sun, Maryland.
Charles was drafted into the service.After
completing aviation, communication, and aeri-
al gunnery school, he joined the 8th AirForce
in Europe.Heserved asaradio operator on
B-17s with the 305th Bomb Group stationed
in Chelveston Airdrome,England. After WWII,
Charles served around the world: St.Tr on
Airfield in Belgium; Schweinfurt, Germany;
Anchorage,Alaska; Baghdad, Iraq; Vienna, Aus-
tria; LaPas,Bolivia; Eglin AirForce Base,Scott
Field AirForce Base; and RightPatterson Air
Force base.His 20-year career with theU.S.
AirForce always made for great conversation
and stories.Charles moto was “OnceaFlyboy,
alwaysaFlyboy.”
Charles wasaloving and caring husband to
his wife Juanita, of 67 years,who predeceased
him.
He is survived by his son, Steven Drew and
wife Cindy; daughter,SusanD.Rowland and
husband Rod; granddaughters,Erin (Arron) and
Lauren (James); grandsons,Kyle (Natalie), Cody
(Sarah), and Curtis; great-grandchildren, Reese,
Vincent, Nora, A.J., Orion, and Zain.
Charles and Juanita are to be interred together
at Arlington National Cemetery later this fall.

2019, Helen Hanson Holt, nee Helen Lorraine
Hanson passed peacefully from this earth.
Preceded in death by her husband of 68 years
former Navy commander BillB.Holt. Helen is
survived by four children, Bill Holt Jr.ofIncline
Village,NV;Susan Steiman of McLean,VA,
Steven Holt of Lorton,VA,Katherine Struck of
Columbia, MD and by her sister Marian Fina of
Washington State.Helen had 11 grandchildren
and seven great grandchildren.
Helen was born in 1925 and grew up in
Conway,Washington where she met her future
husband Bill,anaval aviator.Much of her early
adult life was spent asaNavy wife patiently
and tirelesslyraising her four children at short
postings across the United States and Alaska.
She spent five years in Europe during the Cold
WarinNaples Italy andParisFrance.
Helen returned to the states in 1964 to Spring-
field Virginia. She finally settled in Elkton Vir-
ginia where she ceaselessly volunteered in
this small rural community.Helen will always
be remembered for her warm smile and gra-
cious friendliness.She cheered the hearts of
all whom she met. Helen enjoyed gardening,
painting and wasavoracious reader.She will
be sadly missed asasoft patch of flickering
light in the world’sshaded garden.

Search for Common Ground, Miller advo-
cated for democratic government that seeks
peace,guarantees human rights and
respects religious freedom.
Throughout his career,heworked in close
partnership with his beloved Suzanne.His
colleagues and friends all recognized him for
his integrity,respect of others,gentleness
and persistence.Acollector of books,music,
and art, he expressed himself best through
writing poetry,collected in Wreath ofFriends.
He loved to travel: across America to Alaska
during college,Europe asagraduate student,
and asadiplomat in the Middle East and
former Soviet Union. He also loved his homes
in Alexandria, Virginia and Little Compton,
Rhode Island, where he tended trees and
gardens,grape arbors,and fountains.Tothe
end, his greatest pleasure was to watch birds
and butterflies feed from the flowers and to
hear the falling waters.

Long term resident of Silver Spring and later
of Annapolis,Maryland, Roy Karten died of
complications of Parkinson’sdisease in
Annapolis.Heispredeceased by his father,
David Karten,along serving Pentagon veteran
and his mother,Inge Karten. In the course of
adistinguished career asaphotographer,Roy
served foratime as photo editor forU.S.News
andWorld Report; his images,particularly por-
traits of prominent figures,inpolitics,business
and the arts,from presidents to popstars,
were regular features in many publications.
His photo credits include Newsweek, The New
York Times andWashingtonian. Sharp and
quick to laugh, with an easy conversant style,
Roy could talk to anyone about anything,
establishing quickrapport with his subjects
and leading to surprising invitations.Heshared
stories of days escorting the likes of Audrey
Hepburn and Lauren Bacall around theWash-
ington he knew so well.
Privately,heturned his viewfinder to friends,
events and nature withacelebratory eye,
asking, “Who decides what is beautiful?” and
answering, generously,hundreds of times over.
He is survived by his four cousins,Stuart
Karten, Susan Karten, Leslie Karten and Arthur
Karten. Roy will be remembered and celebrat-
ed by family and friends ataprivate memorial.

of McLean, and her four nieces and nephews,
Gavyn, Bella, Danyka and Ryan were the loves
of her life.VeraNigg andT. J. Abernathy also
heldaspecial place in her life and heart.
Born on July 5, 1985, Jennifer grew up in
Fairfax, Virginia where she attendedW.T.
Woodson High School. Growing up,she was
active in sports,playing soccer,basketball
and field hockey and wasarealWashington
Football fan. She worked for several years as
abartender in theTyson’sCorner andFairfax
areas.
Family playedalarge role in Jennifer’slife.
She loved large family gatherings and looked
forward to the many wonderful vacations the
family took over the years.Another subject
close to her heart was small children. She
couldn’t resist picking up and cuddlingalittle
one when they were around and hoped to
eventually buildacareer in that area.
AMemorial celebrating Jennifer’slife will be
held atFairfax Memorial Funeral Home,9 902
Braddock Road,Fairfax, Virginia on Thursday,
October 10, 2019 at 10 a.m. Interment will
occur later inaprivate family service.

STEPHEN MICHAEL KEYES
BornFebruary 23, 1944, passed from this
life on September 30, 2019. Steve was a
distinguished member of the United States Air
Force,having served inJapan and Vietnam.
Upon leaving active duty Steve became a
member of the United States Secret Service,
Tr easury PoliceForce,where he obtained the
rank of Captain.Following his retirement from
the Secret Service he joined the WilliamC.
Smith Company for 15 years.
He leaves behind his beloved wife and best
friend of 41 years,DebraKeyes,his brother,
Barry Hermiston, sister,Donna Lee Wilkins,
his nephew,Hank Wilkins,and niece,Amy
Bednarz. Additionally,Steve was always grate-
ful for his extended family,Patricia, Daniel and
Michael O'Rielly,and Brian,Kevin and Gregg
Waas and their families.Heleaves many long-
time friends who will remember his outrageous
wit, humor,generosity and zest for living.No
one enjoyedagathering of friends and family
for memories and good times more than Steve.
His loss is significant for those who knew
and loved him. He fought cancer courageously.
