To be sure, Christians are not alone in their censure of homosexuality. Islam, like
Christianity a creed that has missionary ambitions and universalistic pretensions,
has been widely interpreted as proscribing homosexual acts. There are in Islamic
as well as in Christian countries various positions and legal regimes concerning
sexual behaviour. What they share in common is a general intolerance of non-
conformity, treating homosexual practices at various times as immorality, mental
illness, or criminal offence. The third Mosaic religion, Judaism, likewise
traditionally prohibits homosexual conduct.
