EDITOR’S LETTER

Years ago, when I was the editor in chief
of British Marie Claire, then Hearst CEO and now Executive Vice Chairman
Frank Bennack heard that I was planning to leave the magazine. No sooner had he
gotten the word than he booked me on a flight to New York to talk about a job with Hearst
in America (giving up his holiday vacation in the process, mind you).
I always laugh when I remember how, due to the secrecy of the encounter, we had to
meet in a hotel suite and kept changing rooms to avoid being discovered—goodness
knows what the housekeepers thought! At the time I may not have been so sure
about New York, but I soon became certain that I wanted to work for Frank.
During his illustrious, decades-long career, he has not only been instrumental
in shaping Hearst into the vibrant and multifaceted media
company we know today, but he has also proved himself to be the most visionary,
knowledgeable, and fair leader I have ever seen. This month, Frank’s memoir,
Leave Something on the Table (Simon & Schuster), hits bookshelves. Packed with stories
from his professional journey, this riveting read offers profound insights into
the keys to success, from why CEOs should never work with
their door closed to how rigid corporate structures
are overrated and, more important, why everyone should
leave a negotiation feeling like a winner.
It has been an honor to know and work
with Frank, and his book
should be required reading for
anyone with
big dreams.
