WHENNATASHALAMBWASAVICEPRESIDENTwithaBostoninvestmentfirmandexpectinghersecondchild,sheaskedformoreflexibilitytocutdownherthree-hourdailycommute.Herbosssaidno,soLambquitandstartedherowncompany.In2013,sheco-foundedArjunaCapital,awealth-managementfirmthatinvestsincompanieswithasocialandenvironmentalconscience.“Therearedifferentwaysthatpeoplecanhaveapositiveimpactinadditiontoearningcompetitivereturns,”Lambsays.Committedtolevelingtheplayingfieldforwomen,Lambhasbeenaleaderinadvancingwomen’srightsintheworkplace—mostnotably,inaddressingthesalarydisparitiesbetweenmenandwomenatthecompaniesinherclients’investmentportfolios.“It’suntruetosaythatthegenderpaygapisamyth,”shesays.Lambhasbeeninstrumentalinpushingsomeofthecountry’slargestFortune500companies—22sofar—toexposetheirowngenderandracialpaygapsandthencommittoclosingthem.“Whatwefindiswhencompaniesaretransparent,”shesays,“theyactuallytakestepstoimprovetheirperformance.”Companiesmaynotwanttoadmittheyhaveracialandgendergaps,shesays.Butthereisanincentiveforthemtodoso.“Closingthegenderpaygapisnotonlytherightthingtodo,it’sgoodforbusiness,”Lambsays.“Weknowfromthedatathathavingmorewomenandmorepeopleofcoloronteamsandinleadershipleadstofinancialout-performance,becausethere’sdiversityofthought,diversityofperspective.”Thebenefitsofwageequalityalsohaveapositiverippleeffect.“Ifwomenandpeopleofcolorarepaidfairlyfortheworkthattheydo,”Lambsays,“itwouldbeaboontooureconomy,becausepeoplespendthemoneythattheymake.Ifwewaitanother50or100yearstoclosethegenderpaygap,thenwe’remissingahugeopportunity.”Natasha
