Passed peacefully on August 9, 2019 in Carmel,
California. She will be greatly missed by her
five children, Jennifer Coombs,Leslie Coombs,
Kim Sakellis,Stefanie Erkiletian and Michael
Erkiletian and his wife,Jessica. Indirawas
the devoted grandmother of Jeffrey,Michael,
Jacob,Jon, Melisse,Ethan and Sion and loving
great-grandmother of Morgan, Brendan,
Mason, Naomi, John, Nicolas and Desmond.
Indirawas predeceased by husbands,Walter
Coombs and Myron Erkiletian, by her parents,
Hume and Grace Judd and her sister,Patricia
Chaffee.She is survived by her sister,Sandra
Tr eanor as well as numerous beloved nieces
and nephews.
Born Betty Louise Judd onJanuary 11, 1930 in
Washington, DC where she lived the first half
of her life before moving to Carmel, California
in 1973. Upon arrival in California, she became
adevoted follower of the spiritual teachings of
Baba Hari Dass,ofMount Madonna Center in
Santa Cruz, California. He gave her the name,
Indira, creator of beauty,which she loved and
maintained throughout the remainder of her
life.Indirahadaquick wit and maintained
her sense of humor throughout her many
years of illness and decline.She was an avid
reader and her interests included eastern and
western spirituality,business,historical fiction
and, in her later years as her health declined,
alternative health. Indirawas also an active
philanthropistandsupportednumerouschari-
ties and causes over the greater part of her
life.While Indiraspentanumber of years as
astay at home mom, she had an adventurous
and entrepreneurial spirit and started several
businesses over the years,starting with the co-
founding of the Deerfield Horse Center in Great
Falls,Virginia which evolved out of shuttling her
daughters to their riding lessons.InCalifornia
she went on to open Behold the Rising Sun Art
Gallery,AslanTours&Travel and Royal Oaks
Nursery,adrought resistant plant nursery.In
addition, Indirahadakeen eye for home design
and renovated/remodeled numerous homes in
the Carmel area.
The family would like to thank the many
caregivers that have worked for our mother
over the years.Their dedication and love will
never be forgotten.

became known as the “go-to-attorney” in

Ft. Belvoir Virginia.

heart attack after doing something he loved,
cycling to work.
Robert was born in Kansas City,MOonJune
6, 1959, son of GeorgeW.Cox, Jr.and Sheila
(Kent) Cox. He taught history at St.Teresa’s
Academy in Kansas City.Hemoved to NY
to attend Cardozo School of Law atYeshiva
University with the aim of entering into public
interest law.There he met his loving wife,
Wendy Cook, and they gave birth to their son
Satchel Cox. Satchel wasalater-in-life miracle
baby,with the help of IVF.The family briefly
lived in Syracuse,NY,where Robert worked
for Legal Aid Society.They moved to Northern
Virginia 13 years ago when Robert was offered
aposition as attorney for the Social Security
Administration. In 2012, he was promoted to
the position of Administrative Law Judge,and
later to Division Chief Administrative Appeals
Judge.
Robert was admired within the SSA, where
he was known for integrity,generosity and
fairness.This carried through in all aspects of
his life.Robert wasadevoted father,husband,
brother,son, and uncle.Robert was an avid
cyclist, biking an average of 40 miles per day,
and loved fishing with his son and suffering
throughthemixedfortunesoftheKansasCity
Royals.
Robert is survived by his wifeWendy Cook;
son Satchel; parents GeorgeW.and Sheila Cox;
brother GeorgeW.(Chip) Cox III; sister Laura
Cox; niece Katie Sowder,and nephew Andy

telligence fields.Hespent over 60 years
with the CIA, first asastaff officer,later
as an independent contractor.Mr. McCoy

years and completed his service in Ger-

JoAn KNIGHT HERREN
After living her life as “Heaven on Earth”, JoAn
Knight Herren passed away on September 9,
2019 afterasudden illness.
JoAn was born andraised as the eldest of
six siblings in Anamosa, Iowa. Her education
includedateaching degree from Mt. Mercy
College,andaBAand MA from the University
of Iowa. Her passion for learning was exceeded
only by her love for her four children, Vicki,
Cristi,Kevin and Heidi Herren, their families,
Megan andTeri Herren, Chas Dense and her
loving cat Gardenia.
Her dedication to the welfare of young children
was exemplified byalong career teaching
school, establishing two private pre-schools,
and working for the Head Start (HS) program
for over 40 years,culminating in her position
as the Chief of HSTraining andTechnical
Assistance,Office of HS,Washington, DC.
Other interests included storytelling, Irish
dancing, family reunions,genealogy,world
travel and theology.She was ordained as an
Interfaith Minister by the One Spirit Interfaith
Ministry.
ACelebration of Life will be held Saturday,
October 5, 2019 at the Amani Event Center,
4216 Howard Road, Beltsville,MDfrom1to4
p.m. but all are welcome to come early.Inlieu
of flowers the family suggests donations in her
name to the National Head Start Association
leadership and scholarship programs

Mary Elizabeth Levari Pilipchuk of Vienna,VA,
passed away Saturday,September 14, 2019,
at the age of 81. She is survived by her son,
John Pilipchuk, and wife,Johnna; her daughter,
LauraPilipchuk Moore,and husband Michael;
and two grandchildren, Brendan and Marissa
Moore.Mary was preceded in death by her
husband of 59 years,Andrew Pilipchuk; her
daughter,Ellen Pilipchuk; and her son Andrew
Pilipchuk, Jr.who died at birth.
OnFriday September 20, 2019,avisitation will
be held from6to8p.m. at Money and King
Funeral Home in Vienna,VA.Funeral Mass will
be celebrated on Saturday,September 21 at
11 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic

GEORGE N. POLIS,M.D.(Age 90)
Of Bethesda, MD passed away peacefully
on September 16, 2019. Dr.Polis graduated
from Roosevelt High School, Georgetown
University,and University of Maryland Med-
ical School. He served his country in the
U.S.Navy asalieutenant. He was in private
practice for 53 years,and worked for the
FBI, CIA, and State Department. Dr.Polis
also served as the medical director at
Ingleside at Rock Creek Nursing Home,
assistant medical director at Knollwood
Nursing Home,and on the medical staff
at Sibley Hospital for 25 years as Chief of
the Division of General Internal Medicine,
earning the honorable Sibley ChairAward.
He met his wife,Angela, and they were
married in 1961. They had four wonderful
children, NicholasG.Polis,M.D.(Ruth),
KarenG.Polis,Esq., LGSW,JohnG.Polis
(Stephanie), andJamesG.Polis (Suzanne).
Dr.Polisleaveseightgrandchildren,one
great-grandson, and many nieces,
nephews,and God-children. Everlasting be
his memory.Avisitation will take place on
Friday September 20, 2019 at Saint Sophia
Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 2815 36th St
NW,Washington, DC 20007 from 10 to
11 a.m., withafuneral service to follow.
Interment will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

JEAN H. WILKERSON (Age 92)
Of Alexandria,VA,passed away at Alexandria’s
Inova Hospital onFriday,September 13, 2019.
Jean was born on September 26, 1926, in
Rapidan,VA,and was preceded in death by her
parents,Allen M. And MyrtleC.Hopkins and by
her husband, William Wilkerson.
Jean’sfamily moved toFredericksburg,VA,in
the 1930’sand she attendedJames Monroe
High School where she was the valedictorian
of her graduating class.She graduated from
MaryWashington College in 1946 and was also
valedictorian of that class.After college she
began work as an elementary school teacher
in Alexandria,VA,and taught for over 25 years
before retiring.She married William Wilkerson
in 1946 after he returned from WWII. William
served as Director of the District of Columbia
Unemployment Compensation Board until his
death in 1980. Jean enjoyed her volunteer
work as the Librarian forFarlington United
Methodist Church, Alexandria, for many years
after retiring from teaching.She continued her
work as the Librarian until two years ago when
an illness kept her from continuing.
Jean is survived by her brother,Gerald Hopkins
and sister-in-law,Linda, Harrisonburg,VA.She
is also survived by her devoted caretakers
Helen Staton and Deborah Opoku as well as
herFairlington United Methodist Church family.
Agraveside service will be held 2pmTuesday,
September 24, 2019, at Sunset Memorial Gar-
dens inFredericksburg,VA.
