Synopsis: The novel’s climax is a surprise, since the usual three outcomes during
the hunt for a war criminal are (1) captured and turned over to The Hague, (2) killed,
or (3) escapes / never captured. In the novel, the war criminal is set free by the US
government as part of a cynical strategic geopolitical deal. The war criminal goes free,
and the Serbs agree to the Dayton agreement. But Caruso exacts his revenge by having
the war criminal castrated by a Bosnian veterinarian whose own daughter had been raped
and murdered. Both Caruso and the Bosnian victims get their revenge.
Movie: The movie’s climax is a surprise ending, not one of the usual three
outcomes. The war criminal goes free as part of a cynical strategic geopolitical deal
with the Serbs. But Hunt exacts his revenge by capturing and turning the Fox loose in
downtown Sarajevo, where he is recognized (and presumably lynched) by his angry
Bosnian victims. Both Hunt and the Bosnian victims get their revenge.
