didn’t count for squat at that moment.) Although I’d volunteered for the
two-week parachute jump school following SERE, I’d mulled it over and
decided during my hours of solitary confinement there was no way I’d
spend another two weeks running PT and jumping out of perfectly good
airplanes. No thanks. After a weekend of R and R with my wife, I’d put
on a suit and tie and begin my headquarters interim assignment two weeks
early. A few months after that I’d be ready to return to the Farm for the
“ops course”—the CIA’s infamous spy school. As I told my good buddy
R. J., another lawyer who for some inexplicable reason did not share my
