MATERIALS

1-inch-wide double-fold bias tape
Embroidery floss or bakers twine
Needle

Cut four 12-inch bias tape strips. Fold
each strip crosswise in half so one tail is
about 1 inch longer than the other. Arrange
the folded strips with the shorter lengths
on top.
Holding one folded strip, thread both
loose ends of a second strip through the
loop of the fi rst strip. Thread the loop of
a third strip over the ends of the second
strip. Thread the loop of the fourth strip
over the ends of the third strip. Finally,
thread the loose ends of the fourth strip
through the loop of the fi rst strip. Pull
all the loose ends gently to tighten the
weaving into a box pattern (Photo 1).
Flip the assembly so the long pieces are
on top. Fold the long end of one strip over
the woven box. Moving in a circle, repeat
with the remaining three long strips, folding
each strip over the previous one. Pull the
end of the last strip through the loop of the
fi rst strip (Photo 2). The strips should now
all be about the same length. If the lengths
are diff erent, pull gently to adjust.
Fold the end of a strip to make a diagonal
fold near the box. Flip the assembly
and fold the end again to make a point
(Photo 3). Fold the point in half. Tuck the
tail into the center loop. Moving in a circle,
repeat to make a folded point for each end
(Photo 4). Trim any extra bias tape ends
if necessary. Press with a hot iron to set
the folds.
Thread a length of embroidery fl oss onto
a needle. Push the needle through an edge
of the bias-tape star. Holding one loose
end of fl oss, pull the length through the
star. Remove fl oss from needle, and knot
together ends to form a hanging loop.
