O
ver the past few years, many companies have
introduced collaborative communication and
instant messaging (IM) tools such as Yammer,
Microsoft Teams or Workplace. By doing this,
they hope to reduce email overload and make
internal communication more organized, col-
laborative and effective. Individuals need to adapt
their communication styles to this new medium.
Questions
As you read these IM communication examples,
make a note of the answers to these questions:
- How could Tony improve his style in each of the
three examples? - What is the risk of Tony’s style in Example C?

Example A
Marina:
Hi, Tony, can you ping me the service agreement
you created last week for GreenBow?
09:04
Tony:
Yes, I can do that. For what purpose do you need it?
09:04
Marina:
I’d like to adapt it and use it for another client. OK?
09:05
Tony:
I don’t have any objections. You will find the
attachment below.

Example B
Tony:
Hi, Lisa. I hope you’re having a good day. I was thinking
about our conversation last week when you told me
about that project you did for ColourFlow. I think there
might be some useful opportunities for me to learn from
that project and apply it to a project I’m starting soon.
Could we meet next week for you to give me more in-
formation about the background to your project, what
you learned from it and what advice you might be able
to give me before I start thinking about my own project?
10:05
Example C
Sara:
Hi, Tony, are you free for a coffee tomorrow
to talk about our project?
16:11
Tony:
Yes, sure. How about 10 a.m.?
17:12
Tony:
Have you already finished the project overview?
17:12
Tony:
How was your holiday?
17:12
Tony:
Can you send me the budget forecast today?
17:12
Tony:
Oh, I almost forgot. You need to tell me what
happened in last week’s team meeting. I heard there
was a disagreement. Everything OK?
