PEMA KHANDRO
RINPOCHE is a lineage
holder in the Nyingma
and Kagyu traditions
of Tibetan Buddhism,
as well as one of the
few Westerners recog-
nized and enthroned as
a tulku. She founded
the nonprofit organi-
zation Ngakpa Inter-
national, residential
meditation centers in
Virginia and Califor-
nia, and a new retreat
center, Dakini Moun-
tain, near Lake Tahoe.
She is completing a
doctorate specializing
in Tibetan Buddhism
at the University of
Virginia.
NARAYAN HELEN
LIEBENSON has been a
teacher at Cambridge
Insight Meditation
Center since its found-
ing in 1985, as well
as a longtime guiding
teacher at Insight Med-
itation Society, where,
for thirty-five years, she
has taught the annual
women’s retreat with
Christina Feldman.
She is the author of
The Magnanimous
Heart: Compassion and
Love, Loss and Grief,
Joy and Liberation,
published by Wisdom
earlier this year.
MYOKEI CAINE-
BARRETT, SHONIN
was the first American
woman and the first
person of African
Japanese descent to
receive full ordination
as a Nichiren priest.
Today, she is the bishop
of the Nichiren Shu
Buddhist Order of
North America. Based
in Houston, where she
is the guiding teacher
of Myoken-ji Temple,
she also leads prison
sanghas and is active in
Healing Warrior Hearts
(a program for veterans
returning home) and
The Gathering: Bud-
dhist Teachers of Black
African Descent.
REBECCA LI first took
up Chan practice with
Master Sheng Yen, and
served as his interpreter
from 1999 to 2008.
She is the founder of
Chan Dharma Commu-
nity, which combines
online learning with
in-person retreats, and
is a professor of sociol-
ogy at The College of
New Jersey. In addition
to leading retreats at
Dharma Drum centers
across North America,
she has been active in
the Harvard Divinity
School conferences on
Buddhism and Race
and in the Generation
X Dharma Teachers
Conferences.
