NO WAY TO WIN

Re “The BaTTle foR The
Soul of Hong Kong”
[Aug. 26]: I was born in
1982, the year when Marga-
ret Thatcher met with Deng
Xiaoping in Beijing’s Great
Hall of the People to discuss
the future of Hong Kong. Our
confidence about Commu-
nist rule was lost in 1989 after
the bloody crackdown on the
pro-democracy movement
at Tiananmen Square. Many
Hong Kong people, including
my schoolmates and friends
in church, left and settled
abroad in the U.S. and U.K.
Twenty-two years after the
handover, Hong Kong faces
increasing interference from
Beijing. The battle for Hong
Kong is the battle for the au-
tonomy and freedom guar-
anteed by the principle of
“one country, two systems.”
It will be a big mistake if Chi-
nese leaders think they can
win the hearts of our younger
generation merely by inte-
grating Hong Kong and the
mainland economically.

KREMLIN IN KENTUCKY
Re “Welcome, comRades”
[Aug. 26]: Craig Bouchard,
the CEO of Braidy Indus-
tries, got his sales pitch all
wrong. Instead of seeking
Russian funding for Braidy’s
aluminum mill project in
Kentucky, he should have
asked all of us to chip in to

save America from ruthless
foreign investors. I’d gladly
put money into protect-
ing the country from oli-
garchs who seek to control
our republic. And for all our
one-percenters , what bet-
ter return on investment
than keeping Russia out
while making a profit and
giving hard-working Ameri-
cans a chance to support
themselves?
Kathleen Costello,
laguna niguel, calif.

This aRTicle Raises The
question of why, when in-
vestment money is crying out
for profitable return, an in-
dustry needs to turn to ques-
tionable sources. The issue
of quisling politicians is sec-
ondary to the inability of the
financial world to back repu-
table firms to build these so-
called greenfield plants, like
the one in Kentucky.
Stephen Shellshear,
BRighTon, ausTRalia

WheRe WeRe The ameRi-
can industry bidders for this
Kentucky plant? Are they too
enamored with cheap Chi-
nese labor, obscene profits,
and to hell with American
workers?
George V. Shalimoff,
seBasTopol, calif.

THE PRINCIPLED COURSE
Re “The BoRdeR cRisis
Needs Humanity, Not Fear”
[Aug. 26]: Please give this ar-

ticle to the American officials
who need to read it. They
may then reinstate U.S. aid to
Honduras, Guatemala and El
Salvador, encouraging their
citizens to remain in their
countries and make a bet-
ter life there. America must
uphold our values and intel-
ligently resolve the migration
situation.
Kay Rolland,
Boulogne-BillancouRT,

AS SEEN FROM AFAR
issue afTeR issue afTeR
issue, I see TIME covers
about gun violence in the
U.S. [Aug. 19]. There is a lot
of talking and writing done,
but no action taken by legis-
lators. As an American living
abroad, I say, Why do Ameri-
cans just not get it? Why
can’t they look abroad and
see that in countries where
there are no guns, there is
no gun violence? It’s as sim-

ple as that. There is no valid
constitutional right that can
justify growing numbers of
deaths by gunshot. Wake up,
America: you will put a stop
to gun violence only if you
ban guns from the country.
Stop talking—do something.
Stephanie Fechner,
paRis

Re “We have a choice”
[Aug. 19]: Although there is
no guaranteed solution to
stop mass murders, we do
have clear indicators as to
what should be done. One
obvious solution is to ban
private ownership of guns.
To still have the Second
Amendment in your Con-
stitution is inconceivable.
You should set an example
to the world: confiscate and
destroy all guns, without
compensation.
