1 Composition
Whenthesunis stillhighin theskyset
yourcameraupona tripod.Onceyou’re
happywithyourcompositionlockit down
securelyintoposition.Atthispointyouwantto
focusabouta thirdof thewayintoyourframe
andcheckthefocusis sharp.Oncehappy,
switchthefocussettingtothe manual
setting to lock it in place.


2 Camerasettings
Weoptedtosetourcamerain theAperture
prioritymode,andsetouraperturetof/11
at ISO200.Wealsodroppedtheexposure
compensationbyhalfa stopjusttoensure
thehighlightsdidn’tblow.Aswewerein the
Apertureprioritymodeasthelightdropped,
ourshutterspeedtimeincreased and
captured movement.

3 Intervalshooting
Thinkabouthowoftenyouwanttoshoot
a frame.In theendweoptedtotakeone
everytwominutesovera periodof four
hourswhichgaveus 120 frames(plusa few
extrathatweshotmanually)toworkwith.
(Howeverweonlyuseda handfulof these).
Wesetourcamera’sinterval-shooting
setting to take the images.

7 Rawbatchadjustments
OpentheseimagesintoACR(ormakeraw
adjustmentsif usinganotherprogram)and
tweaktheimagestochecktheexposure
detailsarecorrectoneachimage.Wealso
boostedthecontrastandclarityoneach
frame.ClickonSelect All and open these
in the main editor.


8 Layermasks
Havethedarkestimageonthebottomof the
stackandimportalltheotherimagesin the
correctorder(fromdarktolightestontop).
UsetheMovetooltodraganddropwhile
pressingdownShiftasyouletgo.Youwillneed
toadda LayerMasktoeachlayer,apartfrom
thebackground.Hideeachlayerabovethe
background layer apart from the fi rst.

9 UsetheGradienttool
Goto theGradienttool(Foregroundto
Transparentsetting)withblackselectedas
theforegroundcolour.Onthelayermask,hold
downShiftanddraw(leftto right)a straightline
to removeasmuchof thesceneasdesired.
Dothesameforeachlayer,comingin a bitless
eachtimesotheyblend.FinallyusetheBrush
tool to pull/hide any parts of the scene.
